A new name in the Australian accommodation business

Australia is to gain a major new player in the extended stay accommodation space with the arrival of the Staybridge Suites brand.

Staybridge Suites is IHG Hotels & Resorts' globally established upscale extended-stay brand, which will be making its debut in Australia starting with two properties in western Sydney, in Parramatta and Leppington (top image).

IHG has signed a Master Development Agreement with Australian property developer ALAND to launch Staybridge Suites Down Under.

Under the agreement, ALAND will have exclusive development rights for Staybridge Suites in Australia, with a portfolio of at least 15 hotels comprising a minimum of 2,000 rooms to be developed across the country.

The first two franchises will be the 130-room Staybridge Suites Sydney Parramatta and 112-room Staybridge Suites Sydney Leppington. The hotels will be managed by Signature Hotel Management Group.

“This is a significant long-term development agreement for IHG in Australia," says Matt Tripolone, managing director, Australasia & Pacific, for IHG.

"Establishing a portfolio of at least 15 hotels and 2,000 rooms with one development partner gives us a clear pathway to build a meaningful position in the extended-stay segment, where we see considerable long-term opportunity.

“Importantly, this is not simply an agreement about future growth. We are announcing the first two

Staybridge Suites has 355 open hotels and a further 152 in the pipeline globally. The vast majority are in the US and Canada.

Designed for guests travelling for weeks or longer, the properties combine "spacious residential-style suites with the services and sense of community of a hotel".

Marriott International unveils three new New Zealand hotels

Global hotels powerhouse Marriott International is upping its interest in New Zealand.

Marriott has signed agreements with CP Group to bring three new hotels to New Zealand by 2029, adding 335 rooms to its portfolio in New Zealand and strengthening its growing presence in the region.

The agreement is expected to mark the country debut of flagship brand Marriott Hotels in Rotorua (above), as well as the debut of the Autograph Collection brand in Auckland and Wellington.

Building on the relationship between Marriott and CP Group, this signing follows their recently announced St. Regis Queenstown project.

As part of the agreement: Rotorua Marriott Hotel will mark Marriott International’s entry in Rotorua as part of a conversion deal of the existing Arawa Park Hotel Rotorua, following a 12-month renovation slated to be completed in 2027.

The Official Auckland, Autograph Collection, strange name that, is set to bring Marriott’s premium Autograph Collection brand to Auckland in 2028, marking the brand’s arrival in the city through the transformation of a historic building on Eden Crescent in Auckland’s central business district.

Fable Wellington, Autograph Collection will bring the Autograph Collection brand to Wellington, anticipated to open in 2029, through the repurposing of the historic 1940s office building located on the corner of Lambton Quay and Stout Street.

Marriott currently operates only two hotels in New Zealand; JW Marriott Auckland, and Four Points by Sheraton Auckland. Two other new openings are expected in 2027, with Sheraton Christchurch and Moxy Auckland.

“Today’s signing of three hotel deals with CP Group is a landmark advancement of Marriott  International’s strengthening relationship with one of New Zealand’s most prolific hotel investors," says Richard Crawford, vice president for hotel development for Marriott International.

"Securing another foothold in Auckland, plus inaugural hotels in the key markets of Wellington and
Rotorua, are outstanding outcomes for our strategic growth aspirations in New Zealand.

"We are confident that our 300 million Marriott Bonvoy members will welcome more choices across the
country’s North Island and beyond.”

Marriott International has a portfolio of brands across luxury, premium, select, midscale, extended stay, and all-inclusive, with over 10,000 properties in 148 countries and territories.

Farewell Manly Pacific, hello Elysium Manly

Elysium Manly is now open, marking the arrival in Sydney of Australian luxury hotel brand Elysium Hotels.

Formerly known as Manly Pacific, the 213-room beachfront hotel has transitioned to Elysium Manly, joining Elysium Noosa as the brand's second Australian property.

The re-branding to Elysium follows a $40 million investment in the property, including a $30 million
refurbishment of rooms and suites by Coco Republic.

Elysium aims to bring its "distinct expression of contemporary luxury" to one of Sydney's most iconic beachside destinations.

The hotel's new persona brings together "contemporary design, destination dining, intuitive service and integrated wellbeing", with new experiences introduced as part of the Elysium offering.

Elysium Manly general manager Dylan Cole said the official transition marked the
culmination of several years of investment in the property, while introducing a new level of
service and experience not previously available at the hotel:

"Elysium is about looking at every part of the guest experience and asking what more we can
give, from the way we welcome people and anticipate what they might need, to the quality of the
amenities in their room and the details they encounter throughout their stay," he said.

"We have an extraordinary location in Manly and the ambition is to create a hotel experience that genuinely lives up to it.

“There is a generosity to Elysium that goes beyond the physical hotel.

"It’s the freedom to have breakfast brought to your suite after a sauna, knowing your favourite bottle is waiting in the wine fridge, having your dining reservations taken care of, or simply being recognised and looked after by someone who understands how you want to spend your time with us.”

Six ocean-view Wellness Suites feature private infra-red barrel saunas alongside wellness amenities and rituals, while Coastal Two-Bedroom Suites offer "generous living spaces and residential-style comfort".

The pinnacle Elysium Suite offers an elevated stay with an expansive terrace and infra-read sauna overlooking Manly Beach.

Guests can enjoy the rooftop magnesium mineral pool with Pacific Ocean views and dining across hatted Italian restaurant Cibaria, 55 North and Bistro Manly - all just an exhilarating  ferry ride away from Sydney's CBD.

Moxy lands in the Japanese ski fields

If you are looking for fun hotels in which to stay without breaking the bank then the Moxy brand is a good bet.

Moxy Niseko Village has just opened in one of Japan's premium ski resorts with the 310-room hotel offering direct ski-in/ski-out access to the slopes.

Moxy Hotels is part of Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio and its newest opening is located adjacent to the Niseko Village Gondola.

"Moxy Niseko Village reflects the evolution of travel today, where guests are seeking authentic places, flexible experiences and meaningful opportunities to connect," said Cristiano Rinaldi, regional Chief Lodging Product & Services Officer for Marriott International and clearly a man who has mastered marketing jargon.

"Niseko's year-round appeal, global reputation and adventurous spirit make it a natural fit for Moxy.

"This opening brings the brand's playful social energy to one of Japan's most celebrated mountain retreats, creating a stay experience that is approachable, design-forward and deeply connected to the destination."

The hotel has three distinct dining and social venues, a 24/7 fitness centre and offers access to skiing, snowboarding, hiking, cycling and golf.

The opening marks Moxy Hotels' debut in Japan's alpine resort market and coincides with the launch of a new eight-person gondola from December 2026, doubling capacity and enhancing access to more than 30 kilometres of ski terrain.

Moxy Niseko Village will be the brand’s fifth location in Japan, joining Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto.

Hobart's newest rooms with a view

Looking for a room with a view on the Hobart waterfront?

The former Somerset on the Pier has reopened as Citadines Elizabeth Street Pier following an expansion from 56 to 98 studios.

Set directly over Hobart’s waterfront on the pier, the refreshed property pairs contemporary studios and private balconies with harbour views and distinctly local touches - including a daily Sip & Savour hour, local experiences and a 1800-Martini service delivering cocktails straight to guests’ rooms, Tourism Tasmania reports.

The property boasts it is "steps from anywhere". My invite to the opening unfortunately failed to arrive.

But those attractions on the doorstep include Salamanca Market, the MONA Ferry terminal, Constitution Dock’s dining precinct, the Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery, and the downtown shopping hub.

The blurb from owners Ascott promises modern studios and spacious guest rooms, all with balconies overlooking the water.

"Whether you’re here for culture, cuisine or adventure, Citadines Elizabeth Street Pier Hobart offers the perfect base to explore the city’s historic waterfront and the beauty of Tasmania," the website says.

New vibe for one of Sydney's most recognisable hotels

Change is underway at one of Sydney's most instantly recognisable hotels.

Ovolo Sydney, on the Finger Wharf  at Woolloomooloo, is to be given a dramatic transformation with re-styled rooms at the forefront.

General manager James Clark said the hotel would be writing a new chapter.

“We’re incredibly excited to be making some big changes to Ovolo Sydney to enhance our offering, while evolving our unique sense of style,” he said.

“This is a major transformation of a heritage-listed property and one of only a handful in Sydney to be located right on the water. This evolution seeks to evoke luxury that feels effortless, hospitality that feels personal, and experiences that resonate long after checkout.

“We’re examining every stage of the guest experience - from the rooms to the shared spaces - to constantly ask ourselves, ‘how can we do better?’ to deliver ‘more’ with a sophisticated traveller in mind.

“The re-imagined Ovolo Sydney will serve as a luxurious haven for travellers, and the local community. Some places ask you to choose between destination and experience. Here, it is one and the same.”

A highlight of the overhaul will be the Rockstar Suite concept - two exclusive suites with private balconies overlooking Woolloomooloo Bay, with views and space to either entertain in style on the sun loungers, or retreat in private saunas and ice baths.

“Each Ovolo property globally is a reflection of its surroundings - its art, its music and its hidden rhythms," Clark says.

"Ovolo remains a cohesive collection but allows the local soul to shape the story it tells. We believe that true hospitality is felt, not seen. By obsessing over the details and removing friction before it occurs, we create a sense of cocooning calm. We don’t just provide a room; we curate a flow where every moment feels instinctive, fluid and entirely natural.”

Ovolo Sydney celebrates the history of the Finger Wharf, which was  built at the height of Australia's wool trade in 1915.

It remains the world's longest timber-piled wharf and one of Sydney's most significant heritage landmarks, located next door to The Royal Botanic Garden and Art Gallery of New South Wales.

AI bot can help you book the right hotel room

Sick of hearing about AI?

Join the club.

But digital travel platform Agoda has just introduced the Room Grid Bot, an AI-powered chat assistant designed to help travellers decide which room to book.

Available in the Agoda mobile app, the new tool recommends rooms suited to their specific needs.

Agoda says it offers travellers a wide selection of room options when booking a hotel, with room types and offers varying by occupancy, cancellation terms, meal inclusions, and price.

The Room Grid Bot addresses this by using travellers' current search details and the preferences they share in the conversation to recommend the most relevant options.

These recommendations appear directly within the chat, helping travellers narrow down their choices without needing to compare every listing manually.

Bookers can access the bot from the room-selection page after tapping "Select room" on a hotel's property page in the Agoda app.

They can start a conversation by tapping the "Need help choosing a room? Let AI help you" banner without leaving the room-selection page.

Travellers can ask the bot to find options with specific inclusions, such as free breakfast, or to answer relevant property questions, such as check-in times. The Bot also highlights a "Best pick," helping them identify a suitable room based on their preferences more easily.

Idan Zalzberg, Chief Technology Officer at Agoda, said: "Choosing a hotel is only part of the booking decision. Travelers also need to find the right room for their trip, which can be challenging when many options are available.

"The Room Grid Bot helps narrow down those choices based on what travellers want and need, making it easier to identify and book the room that best suits their trip."

The launch builds on Agoda's growing suite of AI-powered tools across the hotel booking journey. The Property AMA (Ask Me Anything) Bot answers accommodation-specific questions - "can I have a room with balcony?" as travellers check out a property, while the Booking Form Bot addresses common questions during checkout.

* Agoda is owned by Booking Holdings, which is listed in the UN Database of businesses profiting from illegal Israeli settlements.

Accor to have three new hotels in Hamilton, New Zealand

Accor, the largest hospitality group in New Zealand, is going all in on the city of Hamilton.

The group has announced the signing of two new Mantra hotels in the fast-growing regional centre.

To be developed by Hamilton-based developers Sanjil Mistry and Pienaar Piso from Mistry Centre Ltd., the two new-build hotels are expected to open in 2027.

Together, they will add 92 rooms to the city inventory, with Mantra Hamilton Pembroke Street (render above) set to offer 52 rooms and Mantra Hamilton Karewa Place set to offer 40 rooms.

The signings build on Accor's existing relationship with Mistry Centre, which is also developing the upcoming Pullman Hamilton, a landmark conversion hotel project in the heart of the city.

The addition of two Mantra hotels will complement Pullman Hamilton by broadening Accor's offering across multiple segments and guest needs, from premium city stays to flexible studio and apartment-style accommodation.

A wine region hotel where old meets new

Rutherglen is a small town in north-east Victoria that draws wine lovers from around Australia to sample its bold reds and legendary fortifieds.

When I lasted visited - a few year ago now - the Victoria Hotel was just another old pub on the main street.

Built in 1868, it had history on its side, but looked in need of some care and attention.

The Victoria began as a modest wooden building before being transformed into a two-storey brick landmark by the magnificently named Shadrack Platts Gollings in 1893.

With its heritage features -including Rutherglen’s original mortuary tucked just beyond the carriage gates - The Victoria proudly holds Victoria’s longest continually operating hotel licence.

In 2021, Kate and Matt Halpin became the custodians of this historic landmark.

The couple returned to their regional origins, adopting the philosophy of "city style meets country soul."

Their vision was to honour The Victoria’s heritage while transforming it into a modern destination that celebrates connection, community, and the spirit of the High Country.

Boy, have they succeeded.

After a multi-million-dollar restoration, they have managed to preserve the hotel’s historic character while introducing contemporary comforts. So much so that last year The Victoria was named ‘Best Redeveloped Hotel in Victoria’ by the Australian Hotels Association.

When I stayed last month in one of the 14 impressive and spacious suites, the popular restaurant (open seven days for lunch and dinner) offering award-winning regional cuisine was jumping, even on a chilly midweek night.

So think elevated, flame-focused dining right on the main street (make sure to try the Pillow bread and the croquettes) just a short drive from cellar doors including my hosts at Morris, All Saints, Campbells, Stanton and Killen, Scion, Pfeiffer and other desirable destinations.

The main street is home to Thousand Pound wine bar, boutiques, cafés and the legendary Parker Pies shop.

For anyone arriving late, or checking out early, there is keyless experience with contactless check-in. The technology works!

The suites feature air-conditioning and heating, flat-screen TV, Hunter Lab bathroom amenities, good sized fluffy towels, tea and coffee-making facilities, a phone charger that works, free high-speed wifi, a bar fridge, off-street guest parking and bath robes and slippers.

There is a lively bar, the restaurant and several shared rooms like the clubby The Library.

* Rutherglen is Around 30 minutes drive from the regional hubs of Albury/Wodonga, Wangaratta and Yarrawonga, The Victoria is an ideal base from which to explore surrounding heritage townships like Beechworth, Milawa, Chiltern, Wahgunyah and Corowa. Or venture a little further afield for a day trip to the King Valley, Alpine snowfields or picturesque Bright & Myrtleford, located less than 90 minutes away.

The hotel currently offers 120 rooms and suites, with that increasing to 168 rooms once the final phase of restoration is complete next year. A new Danieli Spa is also in the works.

French interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon led the redesign of the historic interiors, while rooms have been reconfigured to provide larger layouts and additional junior and one-bedroom suites.

Modern technology has been discreetly incorporated through integrated entertainment systems, automated curtains, personalised lighting and climate controls without detracting from the building’s heritage.

Megève Bois, meanwhile, offers an intimate alpine retreat with 13 rooms and suites, two restaurants, an extensive wine cellar and a mountain-inspired wellness spa.

Italy welcomes two additions. Masseria Aura Terrae in Puglia occupies an 18th-century estate surrounded by vineyards and olive groves overlooking the Adriatic Sea, while in Abruzzo, Relais Villa Corallo combines an 11-room country house with the Michelin-starred Zunica 1880 restaurant.

In Mexico City, the Quintonil Restaurant joins the collection while Japan’s historic Hiiragiya ryokan in Kyoto also becomes part of Relais & Châteaux. Family-owned since 1818, the 23-room property offers traditional kaiseki dining, tatami accommodations and authentic Japanese hospitality.

Other new members include Villa Florhof in Zurich, a restored 15th-century boutique hotel operated under the Lalique brand; Wilderness Reserve in Suffolk, England, offering luxury countryside villas, and The Nell New York, a 134-room luxury hotel scheduled to open in autumn 2027 at Rockefeller Plaza.

* Founded in 1954 in France, Relais & Chateaux is an international collection of independently owned luxury hotels and restaurants that now represents close to 600 properties across over 50 countries.

Westin to debut on the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is to gain another luxury hotel.

Marriott International has signed an agreement with Australian-based M Property for The Westin Gold Coast at Surfers Paradise, which will mark the brand's entry to the region.

Expected to feature 138 keys, the new-build hotel is slated to open in late 2029.

Marriott already currently operates two resorts on the Gold Coast and has a further four properties in the pipeline.

"The Westin Gold Coast represents a natural fit between brand and location, and we already see strong performance across our existing Westin portfolio, both in key domestic and international source markets for the Gold Coast," said Tristan Cooper, Marriott International's Director of Hotel Development, Australia, New Zealand and Pacific.

"We are excited to welcome Westin to the Gold Coast and introduce a genuine point of difference to the market."

The hotel is expected to occupy levels one to 15 of the new-build mixed-use development, with 115 premium guest rooms and 23 suites offering views of the Pacific Ocean or Gold Coast hinterland.

The hotel is expected to feature a signature restaurant and bar, conference and meeting facilities, an infinity pool and pool bar, a fitness studio and the brand’s signature Heavenly Spa by Westin.
