Recommended: A chic - and affordable - hotel in Melbourne

We all have different priorities when it comes to booking a hotel.

Location is very important for me; I don't want to have to trek across town for dinner or my first morning appointment.

A comfortable bed is another priority, as is a peaceful environment. Nothing ruins a stay faster than banging and crashing from an adjacent building site.

Fast wifi is another of my priorities; I like to be able to work at all hours, while I tend to prefer boutique hotels with staff that pay attention. I also want to pay a reasonable price, which can edge me towards a chain hotel.

.
If your hotel choices match mine then you will certainly enjoy The Olsen Hotel in Melbourne's South Yarra, part of the ArtSeries group that is now part of the Peppers/Mantra collection.

You may recall I wrote a few weeks ago about the interactive art project, Colour Your World, at The Olsen and other Art Series hotels. Earlier this month I popped in to check out that offering (which continues through December 30) and to spend the night.

The Olsen is superbly situated on Chapel Street in chic South Yarra with tram stops and South Yarra train station on the doorstep.

Temptations abound with top restaurants including France Soir, Da Noi and Dainty Sichuan within strolling distance, although the hotel’s own Spoonbill serves some enticing modern Australian cuisine and a particularly good breakfast (above).

I was impressed by the modern and contemporary décor (and all those John Olsen prints, as well as super-comfortable beds). The Olsen has the welcoming feel of a much smaller boutique hotel.

The Olsen has a spacious lobby (below) and rooms all feature kitchenettes and well-stocked mini bars and the hotel also has a large glass-bottom swimming pool and day spa.

Thumbs down, though, for charging for bottles of water in the room.

The big positive, of course, is The Olsen is in the heart of Melbourne's best shopping district. To find out more visit www.artserieshotels.com.au/colouryourstay/ or call 1800 278 468. Colour Your Stay packages start from $189 per night.
