Winery owners; art lovers; philanthropists

Elias and Colleen Jreissati have made a huge impact on the Australian wine industry over the past few years with their Levantine Hill wines. 

Based at Coldstream in the Yarra Valley, Levantine Hills has quickly become one of the most popular destinations in the Yarra Valley with its Ezard @ Levantine Hill restaurant. 

The wines, made by former Yarra Yering maestro Paul Bridgeman, have also won several awards. 

In addition to their love for wine, the Jreissati family also has a passion for fine art - and for Tasmania, where they spend a couple of months each year in their Hobart apartment.

This week marked the unveiling of one of Australia’s most significant historical paintings, depicting Hobart in the 1850s, at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.

View of Hobart Town with Mount Wellington in the background (1856) by Austrian artist Eugene von Guerard is one of only a small number of paintings of Tasmania known to exist by the renowned artist.

The Jreissatis bought the painting in 2016 for a reported $1.5 million and have loaned it to TMAG for the next 12 months. 

“We got so excited about being able to buy it because it is just fantastic, but also we hoped that one day we would be able to bring it back home, and we were able to do that with the help of the TMAG people,” Elias said.

“Seeing it on display in the museum with other paintings of its era was in goosebumps territory. We are thrilled.”

Meanwhile, Levantine Hill was also celebrating a top award at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in London. 

The 2014 Levantine Hill Syrah was awarded the trophy for best syrah/shiraz from entries received from over 80 countries.

Regular readers will know I am no fan of wine show results but this is a biggie. 

This spectacular wine, much more restrained than most Australian shirazes, retails for around $85.
