Here’s a robot delivering your pasta

Meals delivered by robots are now a reality on Australia’s Gold Coast.

No more men on noisy motorbikes.

Serve Robotics and DoorDash have launched Australia's first footpath robot delivery service with an initial launch in the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct.

Starting today, DoorDash customers ordering from Gnocchi Gnocchi, Southport - the pilot’s first participating restaurant - can choose to have their order delivered by a Serve robot.

More local restaurants will join the launch in the coming weeks, with any future expansion informed by feedback from the community.

Serve robots travel at walking pace, give way to pedestrians and are designed to safely navigate footpaths. They are supported by “trained remote supervisors” who can assist where needed and each robot displays a contact number for members of the public with questions.

“This is the first time we've taken Serve beyond the United States, and the Gold Coast is the right place to start,” said said Ali Kashani, CEO and co-founder of Serve Robotics

“ It has the walkable neighbourhoods this technology is built for and a city that has shown it welcomes innovation. After delivering for more than 4,500 restaurants at home, we're here to give local restaurants a new way to reach customers and to earn community trust one delivery at a time.

"The City of Gold Coast opened the door, DoorDash brought the restaurants and customers, and Griffith University in the Health and Knowledge Precinct gave our fleet a home. It all leads to the moment I'm most looking forward to, when a Gold Coast family opens their door and finds a robot has arrived with dinner.”

The project is part of DoorDash’s broader multi-modal delivery strategy, which brings together a range of delivery technologies to create more flexible and efficient ways to serve consumers and local businesses. These deliveries typically fulfil orders within short distances, in relatively dense, urban areas, while drivers take on longer-distance orders.

“DoorDash is focused on building a delivery platform that gives customers and merchants more choice, while continuing to support the Dashers who are central to our platform,” said Simon Rossi, vice president for DoorDash APAC.

“This pilot program will help us understand how footpath robots can complement existing delivery options for short, local trips creating another convenient way for Gold Coast customers to access the neighbourhood businesses they love.”

Customers can opt-in or out of robot deliveries.

The partnership is intended to give local restaurants another way to reach nearby customers, particularly during busy periods. What Serve and DoorDash learn during the pilot program will shape how the service grows, and any changes to delivery zones.

While it might work in certain areas, in others I suspect local youths might have fun attacking the delivery units.

City of Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said he welcomed the Australia-first robot food delivery service on the Gold Coast.

“We know that the Gold Coast’s future economy will be shaped by technologies like robotics, artificial intelligence and autonomous systems, and we want our city to be a place where those technologies are developed, tested and put to work,” he said.

At the end of each shift, robots will return to Serve’s operations depot at Griffith University, the first university to host a Serve operations team.

Since Serve began operating, its robots have completed deliveries for thousands of restaurants across U.S. cities including Los Angeles, Miami, Dallas, Chicago and Atlanta. The Gold Coast marks Serve’s first operation outside the United States.

Westin to debut on the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is to gain another luxury hotel.

Expected to feature 138 keys, the new-build hotel is slated to open in late 2029.

Marriott already currently operates two resorts on the Gold Coast and has a further four properties in the pipeline.

Familiar faces to open Sanctuary Cove's new enoteca

It is closing in on 40 years since the eyes of the world were on the opening of Sanctuary Cove.

Owner Mike Gore spared no expense on "The Ultimate Event" back in 1988 with entertainment from Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston and Peter Allen.

What a time we had, despite the rain. Thanks Patti Mostyn.

All those years on I'm still writing about the Gold Coast drawcard with top hospo operators Max and Amanda Alfieri to open a new Italian-style wine bar at the resort next month.

Zio Italian Enoteca will see the former owners of popular Italian restaurant Ioesco will bring their passion for Italian food, wine and hospitality back to the Cove.

Located in Building Four on Masthead Way, along the village’s main thoroughfare, Zio Italian Enoteca will offer seating for approximately 70 guests, with both indoor and outdoor dining available.

“We are incredibly excited to return to Sanctuary Cove and to be part of [developer] Mulpha’s vision for the future of the Village,” the duo said. “We look forward to contributing to the vibrant dining and lifestyle experience that makes Sanctuary Cove such a unique destination.”

Zio Italian Enoteca will offer a selection of local and international wines, paired with traditional Italian antipasto-style offerings including freshly sliced cured meats, artisan cheeses, crusty breads and seasonal accompaniments.

As the venue settles into spring, the menu will expand to feature a broader range of authentic Italian specialty dishes.

“Sanctuary Cove has always been home to us,” said Max Alfieri. “Zio Italian Enoteca gives us the opportunity to share the flavours, traditions and discoveries we have experienced across Italy. From regional wines to time-honoured food traditions, we hope to bring a little piece of Italy to the Cove.”

The former Palazzo Versace gets a new branding

All change at what used to be Palazzo Versace.

The Hilton group has signed the iconic Gold Coast property - now The Imperial Hotel - marking the debut of LXR Hotels & Resorts in Australia in early 2027.

The hotel will undergo an extensive renovation before the re-branding, reports Paul Hutton, area vice president APAC and head of Australasia & South Pacific at Hilton, on LinkedIn.

The 200‑room five-star hotel, opened in 2000, combines grand architecture, Italian‑inspired interiors and a prime waterfront location with direct Broadwater access.

The signing "strengthens Hilton’s expanding luxury and lifestyle portfolio in Australasia", as LXR joins Curio Collection and Tapestry Collection in the region.

LXR Hotels & Resorts is a growing collection of currently 18 award-winning luxury hotels.

"Found in the world's most alluring destinations (the Gold Coast?) each hand-selected property boasts its own storied past and is infused with the essence of its distinctive locale, providing a luxurious hub for the discerning adventurer."

Well that's what the website says.

Multiple Gold Coast roles for experienced head chef

Much-travelled chef Meyjitte Boughenout has taken on a new role on the Gold Coast overseeing two gourmet precinct eateries.

French-born Boughenout is now head chef of Isla Dining & Bar (previously Isla Cantina) and its sister restaurant, Edgewater Dining & Bar, the casual fine dining restaurant next door.

He has also crafted a fresh take on pub classics at Sanctuary Cove Tavern.

Operated by Mulpha Hospitality Group, Isla Dining & Bar and Edgewater Dining & Lounge Bar are both located in the Capri on Via Roma waterfront retail precinct on the Gold Coast.

Boughenout has worked in Michelin0starred restaurants in Belgium, as well as running successful fine-dining restaurants from Tasmania to Queensland.

He says Isla Dining & Bar is bringing a relaxed, easy dining vibe to the Gold Coast.

“With Isla Dining we have created a relaxed space where guests will be well looked after with consistently good quality food,” he said.

“You do not need an excuse to enjoy life and eat well, certainly not on the Gold Coast.”

Entrees include Nonna’s meatballs, jalapeno poppers with cheddar, croquettes, calamari, tempura prawns, bug and prawn roll and yellowfin tuna ceviche.

Mains range from crispy wild barramundi and charred chicken breast to a Wagyu beef burger and a house grill menu.

Next door, Edgewater Dining highlights include grilled Mooloolaba prawns, Wagyu beef tartare and a selection of fresh sashimi and caviar.

Ëdgewater’s signature king prawn and bug risotto, and oven-baked whole snapper are popular while
Canberra-sourced black truffles can now shaved over pasta dishes for a decadent winter touch.

“With Edgewater it was a case of fine tuning and bringing in some fresh ideas to ensure we continue to delight and surprise our guests, whatever the occasion," the chef says.

"Whether its date night or a special celebration, every visit should feel like an occasion.”

Mulpha's restaurants at Capri on Via Roma are part of a portfolio that also includes Anchor Buoy and Cove Tavern in Sanctuary Cove.

The perfect side trip from the Gold Coast beaches

Summer visitors to the beaches of Queensland's Gold Coast are being urged to take a side trip to the vineyards of the nearby Granite Belt.

Local tourism operators say the Granite Belt Wine Country's combination of cool summer nights, farm-fresh produce and natural beauty offer a contrast to the glitter strip.

Nestled on the Great Dividing Range, the Granite Belt is emerging as a summer escape for foodies, wine lovers, and nature enthusiasts.

Under a three-hour drive from Brisbane, the Gold Coast, or Byron Bay, the region offers an alternative to the summer heat of the coast.

"Granite Belt Wine Country isn’t just about incredible wine - though we have that in abundance," said Chris Nolan, president of Granite Belt Wine & Tourism.

"It’s about the cool, fresh nights you won’t find anywhere else in Queensland, paired with seasonal produce, iconic national parks, and cosy accommodation that feels like a home away from home."

The average nightly January temperature drops on average to 4-5 degrees cooler than Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

For nature enthusiasts, the Granite Belt boasts Girraween National Park, known for its dramatic granite outcrops, wildflowers, and wildlife.

“Summer has been amazing on the Granite Belt, we’ve had an incredible influx of tourists to the region all loving the cooler days and nights, low humidity, as well as seeing the vineyards blooming with life,” said Adam Penberthy, owner of the Ballandean Pub and Dear Vincent Wines.

“The pub has been bustling with out-of-towners coming in for a meal after a day exploring or swimming in our epic water holes, cooling off with a cold beer.

“At the cellar door, we’ve been amazed at how busy the summer season has been. Guests have loved our summer release wines Sunshine and our Pink Fizz Pet Nat, perfect for a long lunch under the shade of the 100-year-old olive tree.”

Andaz hotel brand to debut in Australia

It has taken 17 years, but the Hyatt group has unveiled plans for its for first Andaz hotel in Australia.

The Andaz brand (meaning personal style in Hindi/Urdu) was launched in 2007 and Andaz Gold Coast will open in 2025 as part of The Star Gold Coast integrated resort.

Hyatt Hotels Corporation has entered into agreements with a Destination Gold Coast Consortium for an Andaz resort.

Destination Gold Coast Consortium is a joint venture between parent company,The Star Entertainment Group, and its two partners, Far East Consortium and Chow Tai Fook Enterprises.

The Star Gold Coast is slated to open in mid-2025, marking the debut of the Andaz brand in Australia and the Pacific region.

“We are thrilled to announce plans to bring the Andaz brand to Australia's premier resort destination in collaboration with The Star Gold Coast,” said David Udell, group president, Asia Pacific, for Hyatt.

“Hyatt has had a brand presence in Australia for over 40 years, and we are excited to expand our luxury, lifestyle and leisure offerings into sought-after destinations like the Gold Coast. This resort will complement our current portfolio of 10 hotels under five distinct brands in Australia, including Park Hyatt, Grand Hyatt, Hyatt Regency, Hyatt Centric and Hyatt Place.”

I'm sure I am not alone in being unable to differentiate between those brands.

“We are delighted to welcome Andaz Gold Coast to our world-class tourism and entertainment precinct," said The Star Gold Coast general manager hotels Steven McPharlin.

"As part of The Star Gold Coast's AU$2 billion (approximately US$1.33 billion) masterplan, we are proud to continue our investment in this dynamic city while also providing new employment opportunities alongside vibrant hospitality experiences.”

With close to 30 global properties, including in gateway cities such as Tokyo, Singapore, New York and London, and resort destinations like Bali and Maui, the Andaz brand "celebrates and empowers self-expression through imaginative travel".

That's marketing speak. I have no idea what is actually means.

But "the ethos of sophisticated whimsy encourages guests to connect with their innermost curiosities and awaken to new experiences with a local twist". OK.

The Star Gold Coast is set on Broadbeach Island.

Occupying floors six to 21 of the 65-story second tower, the Andaz hotel will have 202 guest rooms and suites, a fitness centre and three food and beverage outlets.

“The Gold Coast is a world-renowned region, and it is energizing for the tourism industry to be welcoming a new international hotel brand to the region,” said Patricia O'Callaghan, Tourism and Events Queensland chief executive officer.

“More than four million Australians visited the Gold Coast last year and we are steadily working our way to recover international arrivals to one of Australia's best known and well-loved destinations.”

Dunedin celebrates resumption of international flights

Dunedin in New Zealand and Hobart in Tasmania have a lot in common.

Both are beautiful but remote locations - and both have international airports that do not currently offer international flights.

Dunedin was celebrating this week, however, with the announcement of a new flight connection with Australia.

The new route between the city and Gold Coast was announced at Dunedin Airport.

Jetstar will operate three departures and three arrivals a week out of Dunedin from June 2025.

Dunedin Mayor Jules Radich says he's thrilled with the announcement.

“We've all been eager to see a regularly scheduled international service reinstated, ever since direct flights to Brisbane stopped in March 2020," he said.

Dunedin City Council buildings, St Paul's Cathedral and Tūhura Otago Museum were lit up in Jetstar orange to celebrate the news.

“While we'll be encouraging locals to travel across the ditch, we'll also focus our efforts on enticing Queenslanders to come here and experience the amazing attractions our city – and the lower South Island – have to offer,” Radich says.

Tickets for the Dunedin-Gold Coast route are on sale now.

Quench your thirst as the Gold Coast welcomes new watering holes

It can get hot and sweaty on the Gold Coast, so it is no surprise that three new bars have opened in time to despatch summer refreshment.

From Miami to Surfers Paradise and up on Tamborine Mountain, the openings are coming thick and fast.

Roji Cat Beer Bar (below) brings a slice of Tokyo's alleyway drinking culture to Miami.

Think rotating specialty beers, cocktails and food offerings.

Led by head brewer Satoshi Tamura, the brewery offers 12 house-made brews and a sake bar with 24 varieties.

The brewery also offers an intimate karaoke room and a dart machine room, adding fun and potential caterwauling action.

Lulu Rooftop Bar in Surfers Paradise is set to be a popular destination for long lunches and weekend brunch sessions.

The venue incorporates a large indoor bar and dance floor as as a sprawling open-air rooftop with capacity for 210 guests. Think a beachy vibe with food and drinks.

Up in the hinterlands, The Kennel Taproom and Sports Bar (top image) is a new bar at Boxer Brewing Company at Tamborine Mountain.

Named after owner Jon Heslop's childhood pet boxer dog, offering everything from lagers to curated craft brews.

There will be live music on the deck every weekend.

Here's a bizarre marketing idea: Champagne and burgers

Sometimes you have to wonder who thinks up some of the weird marketing ideas that get foisted on the public.

The latest is a "brainwave" of pairing Champagne with burgers on the Gold Coast.

Champagne and oysters, maybe; Champagne and crab sandwiches, certainly. But Champagne and burgers? Meh!

This summer offering from The Langham, Gold Coast, is a summer partnership with Champagne House Veuve Clicquot: a Champagne and Burger Pairing Pool Bar Takeover "that promises to redefine luxury on the Gold Coast".

There is also some gushing in the press release about how "the iconic yellow hue of Veuve Clicquot's label will infuse the décor, creating a vibrant and opulent atmosphere that resonates with the brand's rich heritage."

Was someone actually paid to write that rubbish?

Anyway, from now until mid January 2023 (I think they mean 2024, but who knows?) the Pool Bar will "undergo a transformation into a retro-chic oasis".

So pair your burger with Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label. Perhaps a Lobster Banh Mi Slider - which is not really a burger and actually sounds like a decent idea.

If you are having a real burger, however, go Beaujolais, or Burgundy. In Australia that means a gamay, or a pinot noir.

Anyways, the package, including a glass of Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label and the gourmet burger pairing, is priced at $65. Additionally, the daily happy hour from 4pm to 5pm offers a glass for $35 and a bottle for $175.

Are you happy to be checked into your hotel by a robot?

Would you rather be checked in or out of your hotel by a robot, or a human being?

As one of those who refuses to use self-checkout facilities at the supermarket, I know which camp I am in.

But one hotel group is banking on your preference being a robot.

Dorsett , which has hotels on the Gold Coast and in Melbourne, says its technology roll-out is "designed to deliver a more personalised guest experience" and ensure smooth operations behind the scenes.

Just how a robot delivers a more personalised guest experience is one of life's little mysteries.

The Hong Kong-based Dorsett group says its digital solutions are "designed to cater to the tech-savvy Dorsett Hotel customer".

Look out. Here comes some PR bulldust: "As a Hong Kong hospitality brand, Dorsett is tech-forward, innovating for the greater good of the customer experience. Tech solutions free up staff to provide a more hands-on experience right throughout the hotel."

Dorsett Melbourne and Gold Coast both have robots that have been nicknamed Tim and Tam by the Gold Coast team and Dorothy and Dexter by the team in Melbourne.

The ugly-looking short-arse critters have been programmed to greet guests, conduct the check-in/out process and provide guests with their keys. The robots will also provide information on local attractions and events.

The press release says the new Dorsett Melbourne and Gold Coast robots will not replace human staff but rather reduce waiting times by around 60% while offering "job enhancement and upskilling to our staff. The technology also controls hotel staff workflow during peak arrival times, improving customer service."

Narelle Welsh, director of sales and marketing at Dorsett Melbourne, is firmly onside with the hype.

“By using technology to free up our time at the front desk, the team are able to provide better service to our guests," she says. "We now have the time to be more attentive to the guest experience and the hotel runs more smoothly as a result.”

I can't wait to hear from guests whether this is, in fact, the case. I'd be much more impressed if the robots were trained to take your suitcases to your room, shine your shoes or deliver a morning paper to your door.

Other technology-based features of the hotels include in-room dining through QR code ordering (what about older guests who might not understand QR technology?), and paperless Do Not Disturb signs that are colour-coded with a miniature keypad in each room.

All televisions throughout the hotels have Chromecast for easy streaming from a phone to the TV - and that's certainly a good thing.

See www.dorsett.com.

Bonza to link Launceston with the Gold Coast

Tasmania is becoming more and more connected.

Low-cost airline Bonza this week announced it will connect the Gold Coast to Launceston (above) for the first time with year-round flights starting in November.

The unveiling of Launceston as a destination marks the Tasmanian debut of Bonza, and is the 18th destination for the carrier which launched this year.

From November 21, travellers will be able to fly directly between the Gold Coast and Launceston three times a week on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays, with prices starting from $79pp via the FlyBonza app.

Launceston Airport CEO Shane O’Hare said the new route will open up more leisure opportunities for Tasmanians searching for a holiday in the sun.

“These year-round services will make it much easier for Tasmanians to enjoy Australia’s favourite holiday hotspot, but it also opens the door for thousands more tourists from south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales to visit our state,” he said.

Bonza CCO Carly Povey said the carrier’s buzz is already reaching Tasmanians, who have downloaded its app 11,000 times, adding “there will be more destinations for Launceston, and Bonza’s wider route map, to come”, with details to be revealed “when the time is right”.

The flights are still subject to regulatory approval but they must be confident as tickets are already on sale.

"This is good news for Aussie travellers and the many small-to-medium businesses who make up the local tourism and hospitality industries,” Povey added.

Launceston is a UNESCO City of Gastronomy and a gateway to nature experiences including Cradle Mountain. It is thee first destination outside of Australia’s East Coast to be added to Bonza’s network.

Keeping it casual at Sanctuary Cove

Back in 1988, when I was working for the US news agency Associated Press, I was given the assignment of covering the opening of a swish new resort on the Gold Coast.

It was no ordinary opening.

Frank Sinatra and Whitney Houston headed an entertainment line-up that also included Peter Allen, while Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert played some tennis for the invitees and there was Arnold Palmer, who designed the golf course, enjoying the ambience.

It was dubbed "The Ultimate Event". Anyone who was anyone was there and developer Mike Gore earned worldwide publicity.

Sanctuary Cove has been through some ups and downs over the 35 subsequent years, but new owners Mulpha Group are betting it will bounce back again.

The latest addition to the Cove line-up is Waterfront restaurant Anchor Buoy, which has been has been refurbished and reopened with a new menu following its acquisition last year by Mulpha.

The new menu from chef Mike Marshall includes crumbed snapper schnitzel; roast scallops with chorizo crumble and garlic butter, and cold smoked chicken salad, and local favourite fish and chips.

“Our aim is to reflect the spirit of Sanctuary Cove, providing great food and service at unpretentious prices for locals, boaties and tourists alike, whether they are popping in for a quick bite or relaxing in the sea breeze with a nice cool drink,” said Marshall.

Sean Robertson, Mulpha’s Regional General Manager for Queensland, is overseeing the launch.

“We know how important great food and drink venues are for Sanctuary Cove residents, visitors and other local businesses, and we wanted to create a venue that is open for lunch as well as dinner that showcases exceptional food and service," he said.

“Anchor Buoy joins our Ioesco restaurant, and the Sanctuary Cove Tavern, as iconic local venues we are investing in to create a contemporary food and beverage scene that helps make Sanctuary Cove a great place to live and international tourist destination.”

Mulpha's hospitality portfolio includes Bimbadgen winery and Esca restaurant, wedding venue Palmers Lane and Emma’s Cottage Vineyard in the Hunter Valley as well as InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort, InterContinental Sydney, and InterContinental Hayman Island.

Air Asia X returns to the Gold Coast

The AirAsia group is making another major push into Australia with an announcement of a return first-ever route - the Gold Coast, from February 15 next year.

The route will be the airline’s fourth destination in Australia, further expanding its network Down Under.

Following the return to Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, AAX has carried over 30,000 guests between Malaysia and Australia.

That number is set to grow substantially with the new announcement and additional frequencies to Sydney and Melbourne launching this month.

Fares between the Gold Coast and Kuala Lumpur start from RM799 (under $299) all-in one way for economy and RM3,999 (under $1340) one way for premium flatbed seats.

AirAsia X CEO Benyamin Ismail said there has been overwhelming demand for the airline’s return to the Gold Coast

“We are thrilled to be coming back to the stunning Gold Coast as the first and only low-cost carrier flying direct. As our first-ever route, which launched in November 2007, this is an incredibly special announcement for AAX.

“Fifteen years ago the Gold Coast was the catalyst for the birth of AirAsia X and our Australia expansion, which quickly became one of our most popular core markets.

“Through Kuala Lumpur, AirAsia X will connect visitors to more than 130 destinations across Asia, including Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, India, South Korea and many more.”

Queensland Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said: “The return of AirAsia X to Gold Coast Airport’s arrivals board is a terrific investment in Gold Coast tourism and jobs.

"International aviation is highly competitive but absolutely critical to rebuilding Queensland’s post-Covid overseas visitor economy and that’s why we’re backing AirAsia X on the Gold Coast.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming Malaysian visitors back to enjoy Queensland’s great lifestyle in Australia’s favourite destination and AirAsia X increasing its inbound flight schedule to five a week by late 2023."

Alongside AAX’s return to Australia, sister medium-haul airline Thai AirAsia X also recently launched its first ever direct services between Bangkok to Sydney and Melbourne.

Saints alive! St.Regis to land on the Gold Coast

Australia is to get its first hotel that is part of the ritzy St. Regis brand - but not until 2027.

Marriott International has signed a management agreement with property development company Gurner to bring the St. Regis brand to the Gold Coast.

“This signing of The St. Regis Gold Coast Resort in Australia is momentous for Marriott International, and a wonderful advancement for the destination," said said Richard Crawford, vice president Hotel Development, Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific for Marriott International.

"The St. Regis brand promises a vanguard spirit (wow!) steeped in history and tradition, and is synonymous with global luxury. We appreciate Gurner Group’s confidence in selecting St. Regis as the centrepiece of its world-class mixed-use development.

"Their well-earned reputation for excellence and vision for the Gold Coast aligns exceptionally well with the very high standards we set for every St. Regis hotel around the world and we look forward to bringing to life an iteration of the brand that is modern, aspirational, and befits the lifestyle and energy of the Gold Coast.”

So Mr Crawford is impressed then.

The hotel is set to be part of the first tower in the $1.7 billion La Pelago project - a lifestyle resort and destination within the Budds Beach precinct.

La Pelago will feature 12,000 square meters of lifestyle amenities including luxury residential residences, The St. Regis Gold Coast Resort (render above), and hospitality and retail facilities.

The new-build resort is anticipated to feature around 185 guest rooms and suites that will offer either ocean or hinterland views.

Here come your groceries - delivered by drone

My first thought was that April Fools' Day had been brought forward, but apparently not.

Gold Coast residents are to be added to a trial of a new service that delivers groceries direct to their homes.

Coles has paired with global on-demand drone delivery company Wing to trial the service in the Gold Coast suburbs of Ormeau, Ormeau Hills, and Yatala - starting on November 2.

The deliveries will be flown from the Coles store at Ormeau Village Shopping Centre and will be gradually expanded to include other nearby suburbs, delivering 500 of the most popular Coles grocery items including bread, fresh produce, convenience meals, snacks, health care items, and household essentials.

The press release says Coles is the first major Australian retailer to trial the new ‘store-to-door’ drone delivery model, with a dedicated fleet of Wing delivery drones co-located in the Coles store car park.

Coles team members will process and pack orders, and Wing staff will load the drones and oversee operation of the delivery service. Delivering frozen chickens or 24-packs of toilet rolls might be problematic.

Coles Head of Network Development and Customer Delivery (phew!) James Geddes said: “We are delighted to be expanding our drone delivery pilot program with Wing to our Queensland customers.

"The service will provide a convenient and effective way of delivering everyday essentials to our customers’ homes in a matter of minutes.

“Customers can now get those urgent items they need in a hurry, delivered by drone, directly from the local Coles Ormeau Village store.

"Whether they’ve forgotten to pick up a loaf of bread or fresh milk during their weekly shop or are missing an ingredient for dinner-time meal prep or school lunches, they can now get those products delivered quickly, without having to drive to the store."

The Coles drone delivery expansion into Queensland follows a successful pilot program launched in Canberra.

As part of the expansion into South-East Queensland, Wing will also be offering Coles items for delivery from the rooftop of the Gland Plaza in Logan City.

Customers can download the Wing app (available from the App Store or Google Play), enter their address, and add items to their cart before submitting their order.

Gold Coast gets its first Sebel hotel

The Gold Coast has its first Sebel hotel property with the opening today of The Sebel Twin Towns Coolangatta.

After an extensive $11 million transformation of the ocean tower of Mantra Twin Towns Coolangatta by Accor, the two hotels now sit side-by-side.

The Sebel Twin Towns Coolangatta has 120 rooms across five floors, including a selection of queen rooms, twin rooms and king suites.

An executive lounge exclusively for The Sebel guests, The Sebel Den, will also launch in the coming months.

Accor Pacific Chief Executive Officer, Sarah Derry, said: “We are excited to bring The Sebel, a hotel brand of stature and presence, to the Gold Coast.

“The Sebel has an exceptional reputation for delivering world-class accommodation and an outstanding guest service experience.

“We’re seeing strong visitor numbers at our Gold Coast properties and the Gold Coast continues to be one the most popular destinations to visit in Australia.”

Accor and Twin Towns Clubs & Resorts have been in partnership since Mantra Twin Towns Coolangatta was launched in 2015.

Twin Towns CEO Rob Smith said: “After five years of planning, we are thrilled to welcome The Sebel brand to Twin Towns and look forward to the future success of this new partnership.

"The $11 million transformation has elevated the hotel rooms to a brand new level of style and sophistication."

Located on the southern Gold Coast, The Sebel Twin Towns Coolangatta is just a short stroll to Greenmount Beach and Rainbow Bay, where the Quicksilver Roxy Pro surfing event is held annually.

The resort features a range of on-site recreation facilities, including  a heated indoor swimming pool, a resort-style swimming pool, two outdoor spa tubs, a fitness centre and steam room, a mini golf course and games room, and two tennis courts.
