Belfast gets a chance to sample Moxy

Marriott International's Moxy hotel brand has enjoyed much success since he first Moxy Hotel was opened in Milan in 2014.

Just 11 years on, Marriott has opened its 100th Moxy hotel in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) with the debut of Moxy Belfast City (above).

The Moxy brand aims to offer fun, affordable stays. I've tried three: Glasgow, Milan Malpensa and Sydney Airport.

Set in the centre of Belfast, the 179-room property is the first Moxy in Northern Ireland.

A partnership with MHL Hotel Collection, the conversion project features the signature Moxy vibe - from a lobby where guests check in at Bar Moxy with a welcome drink, to buzzing communal spaces.

Like its siblings, the hotel is promoted as offering grab-and-go bites and a fun vibe.

It is within walking distance of Belfast City Hall, Ulster Hall, Victoria Square, and the nightlife area:  Cathedral Quarter.

“Reaching 100 hotels in EMEA is a proud moment for the Moxy brand,” said Neal Jones, Chief Operating Officer for Europe & Africa Premium & Select, Marriott International (phew!)

“Moxy Belfast City captures everything our guests love -bold design, energetic service, and a sense of fun that’s unmistakably Moxy. We’ve been challenging traditional hotel stays since the brand launched a decade ago, and now 60% of our global portfolio is in this region.”

After Belfast - not my favourite destination, I'm afraid - another five Moxy properties are scheduled to open this year in Europe in Lisbon, Dublin, Hamburg, London’s Piccadilly Circus, and Paris’s La Villette.

Moxy - part of the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio - has built a reputation for industrial design, vibrant social areas, and youth appeal.

Paul Higgins, partner at MHL Hotel Collection, said: “We’re thrilled to be the 100th Moxy and the first in Northern Ireland. Belfast’s energy and character make it the perfect home for a brand that thrives on connection, fun, and innovation.”

Wealthy travellers have increased focus on wellness

Wellness options play a key role when well-heeled travellers across the Asia Pacific region choose accommodation options, new research shows.

The Luxury Group by Marriott International has launched its The Intentional Traveler (their US spelling, not mine) revealing behaviours among high-net-worth travellers across key markets.

Wellness plays key role in destination choice, with 90% of travellers considering it a top booking priority.

The report also showed 72% of those surveyed plan to increase their luxury travel spending and destinations including Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Cambodia are gaining in popularity.

"Luxury travellers are now more intentional than ever before," says Oriol Montal, regional vice president, Luxury, Asia Pacific excluding China, Marriott International. Two counts against him: use of industry jargon and absurd job title.

"They are seeking journeys that align with their values, enhance wellbeing, and deliver deep personal meaning. For Marriott International, this represents an opportunity to evolve luxury hospitality into something more transformational, curated, and emotionally resonant."

Wellbeing has become a cornerstone of luxury travel. In 2025. Those 90% of travellers who cite wellness experiences as a key factor in their booking decisions are up from 80% the year prior.

Beyond traditional spa retreats, luxury travellers are embracing holistic wellness experiences - from forest immersions and nutrition programs to sound healing and sleep therapies.

Asia is the top destination for wellness journeys (67%), where 26% of travellers are planning a dedicated wellness or spa retreat.

A remarkable 93% of high-net-worth travellers in the region prefer to return to destinations they already love, with 89% saying they're more likely to revisit places where they feel a meaningful connection.

The full report is available to download

# The report surveyed 1,750 of Asia Pacific's most affluent travellers across Australia, Singapore, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan, and Thailand.

JW Marriott hotel brand makes its New Zealand debut

Auckland is very much a place on the move, and New Zealand's largest city this week welcomed JW Marriott Auckland - the Marriott brand's first property in the country.

JW Marriott is part of Marriott Bonvoy's portfolio of over 30 hotel brands, and has unveiled the new JW Marriott Auckland in the heart of downtown Auckland.

JW Marriott Auckland Executive Suite

JW Marriott Auckland was designed by renowned Singaporean architecture firm O37 and draws on New Zealand's art, culture, and natural beauty.

Reflecting the shifting beauty of each season, the design weaves together contrasting textures: raw and polished, rough and smooth.

This vision comes to life in Watersplash, a bespoke sculptural hand-blown chandelier by Lasvit, inspired by the rivers and lakes of New Zealand.

"JW Marriott embraces the belief that a connection to the natural environment is an important part of nourishing one's soul," says Jason Nuell, area vice president for Marriott International.

" JW Marriott Auckland embodies the brand's commitment to providing a haven where guests can focus on feeling whole in mind, body, and spirit. It is a destination where both locals and international travelers can experience a blend of modern luxury and exceptional hospitality in the heart of the city to pause, recharge, and reconnect."

The hotel has 271 guest rooms and 15 suites along with and all guest rooms come complete with yoga mats and risers, enhanced by an in-room program of wellness and workout routines (sounds scary!)

The Wellness Centre includes a 14-metre-long heated indoor pool with panoramic harbour views and views of the centre of Auckland.

The hotel's elegant lobby bar, Forum, offers barista-crafted coffee and small bites and then transforms into a bar at night.

The signature restaurant, Trivet, has head chef Wallace Mua showcasing flavours from different Polynesian cuisines.

In September, the hotel plans to launch a contemporary teppan house celebrating impressive Japanese-inspired dishes.

"I am honoured to bring the JW Marriott vision of luxury and well-being to life in this vibrant city," says GM Girish Talreja.

"Our goal is to create an exceptional guest experience and provide a sanctuary where guests can relax, recharge, and create lasting memories."

"Set along the iconic Gurney Drive in Penang, we are excited to offer guests and Residence Owners Marriott's signature blend of modern amenities and timeless charm, creating lasting memories in one of Malaysia's most sought-after island destinations."

There are currently 20 brands within Marriott Bonvoy's portfolio in Malaysia.

"It is not just another landmark in our skyline but a testament to our commitment to excellence, progress, and growth. This development strengthens our capacity to welcome visitors from all over the world, while also enriching the experiences they will have here.

"By doing so, we further bolster Penang's appeal as a top-tier destination, creating new opportunities for our local economy."

Hotel promotion is written in the stars

When it comes to hotel promotions there is nothing that is too whacky.

I had to make sure it was not April 1 when an email landed touting a collaboration between Moxy Hotels and leading astrology platform Sanctuary.

Apparently the pair has launched "a transformative astrological travel partnership, sparking cosmic curiosity in travellers across the globe".

Stop sniggering up the back!

Travellers apparently now have "the opportunity to take trips "that are literally written in the stars".

The partnership will feature Cosmic Curations, astro-adventure guides, and harnessing the power of astrocartography to bring consumers free personalsed travel recommendations including when to travel, where to travel and even who to travel with based on their birth signs.

I'm already hopelessly lost in space.

Moxy guests will also experience things such as:

# Sip by Sign at Bar Moxy: a new menu of cocktails and cosmically-inspired coffee foam patterns, manifesting an incredible stay from check-in.

# Bedtime Stories - Moxy’s signature Bedtime Stories program sees guests using their in-room rotary phones to hear their 2024 predictions by star sign element, listen to a serene sound bath, or journey through the universe and their psyche with dream interpretations.

# Localized Programming - Every destination has its own lore, and Moxy and Sanctuary want to highlight those. These include Aura Photography at Moxy Virginia Beach, full moon parties at Moxy Lisbon City, and many more.

I'm still not sure this is a real thing, but I do known Moxy is a brand with over 125 hotels across the world.

"Now, through our partnership with Sanctuary, guests can choose their destination in a way they never could before, and have it come to life during their stay,” says Brian Povinelli, senior vice president, Global Head of Marketing and Brand at Marriott International,

“Sanctuary was truly our ‘compatible sign’ for this initiative, as they share the same optimistic, colorful and playful point of view about the world as Moxy. We can’t wait for our guests all around the world to see it first-hand.”

"Our organisation is incredibly proud to partner with such a prestigious hotel company, and the Pelligra family, in delivering the Keystone Adelaide Tower.”

The new hotel will be the fifth Westin property in the Australia Pacific region, joining Westin hotels located in Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Fiji.

A big wave of Moxy to hit Australia and New Zealand

An American ex boss of mine once said that I had "a lot of moxy".

I think he meant that I was a loudmouth pain-in-the-ass, but the word can also mean vibrant and full of of sass.

The online dictionary spells the world moxie, and defines it as "force of character, determination, or nerve".

It is a good name for a hotel brand with a fresh young vibe.

I've enjoyed recent stays at two Moxy hotels; one in Glasgow, Scotland, and, more recently, at Milan Airport earlier this year.

The one at Malpensa gave me a late check out (delayed flight) for a very reasonable fee, had fast, free wifi and served delicious chilled Lugana at the bar. What more do you need?

Australia will get its first Moxy when the Moxy Sydney Airport Hotel opens in the middle of next year.

The first Moxy Hotel to open in Australia for Marriott International, it is a $140 million project for joint venture owners RF Corval and KS Hotels & Resorts.

The hotel is located directly alongside Sydney Airport and will feature 301 guest rooms, the Moxy Kitchen and Moxy Bar – which will serve as a buzzing communal space and check-in area.

The property will also includes 199sqm of meeting and event space.

The hotel is billed being "conveniently positioned on a major thoroughfare into both the Sydney domestic and international terminals" - but they are a bloody long way from each other, so I am not sure how that will work.

Sean Hunt, area vice president for Marriott International, said: “The playful Moxy brand is one of Marriott International’s fastest growing brands in the Asia Pacific region - and we have four more in the pipeline in Melbourne, Perth, Auckland and Queenstown.

"With air travel now at 77% of pre-Covid levels and continuing to grow, Moxy Sydney Airport is located here in the heart of Australia’s international and domestic visitor gateway.”

Australia is to get its first hotel that is part of the ritzy St. Regis brand - but not until 2027.

Marriott International has signed a management agreement with property development company Gurner to bring the St. Regis brand to the Gold Coast.

“This signing of The St. Regis Gold Coast Resort in Australia is momentous for Marriott International, and a wonderful advancement for the destination," said said Richard Crawford, vice president Hotel Development, Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific for Marriott International.

"The St. Regis brand promises a vanguard spirit (wow!) steeped in history and tradition, and is synonymous with global luxury. We appreciate Gurner Group’s confidence in selecting St. Regis as the centrepiece of its world-class mixed-use development.

"Their well-earned reputation for excellence and vision for the Gold Coast aligns exceptionally well with the very high standards we set for every St. Regis hotel around the world and we look forward to bringing to life an iteration of the brand that is modern, aspirational, and befits the lifestyle and energy of the Gold Coast.”

So Mr Crawford is impressed then.

The hotel is set to be part of the first tower in the $1.7 billion La Pelago project - a lifestyle resort and destination within the Budds Beach precinct.

La Pelago will feature 12,000 square meters of lifestyle amenities including luxury residential residences, The St. Regis Gold Coast Resort (render above), and hospitality and retail facilities.

The new-build resort is anticipated to feature around 185 guest rooms and suites that will offer either ocean or hinterland views.

The St. Regis Gold Coast Resort will be the fourth Marriott International property on the Gold Coast when it opens, adding to the company’s existing Queensland portfolio of the JW Marriott Gold Coast Resort and Spa, Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort Gold Coast, W Brisbane, Brisbane Marriott Hotel, Four Points by Sheraton Brisbane, The Westin Brisbane, Courtyard by Marriott South Bank Brisbane, and The Ritz-Carlton, Gold Coast, which is expected to open in 2026.

Global hotel group shuts down Russian operations

First McDonald's, then Starbucks. Now Marriott. Well-off Russian consumers are paying the price for their Government's invasion of and ongoing brutality in Ukraine.

Hotel group Marriott International announced this week that it is halting all operations in Russia.

It had already closed its regional office in Moscow and suspended new openings and planned new developments after the Ukraine invasion, Travel Mole reported.

“Newly announced US, UK and EU restrictions will make it impossible for Marriott to continue to operate or franchise hotels in the Russian market,” the company said in a June 3 statement.

Marriott has more than 20 hotels in the country operated by third parties which have remained open.

Marriott has operated in Russia for 25 years with showpieces like the Moscow Marriott Grand Hotel (above).

The company says it is "focused on taking care of our Russian-based associates" and helping those in Ukraine and Russia willing to work with Marriott overseas.

“We continue to join our associates and millions of people around the world in wishing for an end to the current violence.”

The company says ‘the process to suspend operations in a market where Marriott has operated for 25 years is complex."
