New Park Hyatt aims sky high

Travellers who like a room with a view will make a beeline for the new Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, which marks the luxury brand’s entry into Malaysia.

With rooms located between levels 75 and 114 of the Merdeka 118 – the tallest skyscraper in Asia Pacific, the hotel offers what are described as "unparalleled views of the Malaysian capital’s skyline".

"The Park Hyatt brand hits a milestone at 50 properties globally, adding its first hotel in Malaysia with the debut of Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur - also marking an important breakthrough for the brand within south-east Asia," said David Udell, group president, Asia Pacific, Hyatt.

"This makes for an exciting chapter for Hyatt’s brand growth in the region, with three new properties opening in Kuala Lumpur within a year, an expansion of diverse offerings.”

Each of the 252 guestrooms and suites will have floor-to-ceiling windows for both views and natural light. Suites feature living areas, a full bath with a separate rain shower and aromatherapy shower steamer, double vanity, a walk-in dressing room, personal study area, and, in select rooms, private dining spaces overlooking the cityscape.

Interiors by G.A Group are inspired by the traditional Malay Kampung houses.

A guided experience through Merdeka 118 Precinct is available with exclusive access to the historical landmark Stadium Merdeka where Malaysia’s Independence was declared, Al-Sultan Abdullah Mosque, the Merdeka Textile Museum, and Merdeka 118 building.

“Merdeka 118 will be a catalyst to uplift communities and enhance Kuala Lumpur’s long-term vibrancy," says YM Raja Tan Sri Dato' Seri Arshad Raja Tun Uda, Group Chairman of developers PNB.

The dining destinations at Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur will showcase Malaysia’s multicultural cuisine, while a yoga studio, fitness centre and private treatment suites are on level 99.

British Airways cancels hundreds of flights

British Airways has been forced to cancel hundreds of long-haul flights over the next few months, blaming what it says are engine issues.

BA says it has been forced to ground several aircraft, news portal Travel Mole reports.

The airline will cut daily flights from London Gatwick to New York JFK over the northern hemisphere winter.

BA blames delays on receiving spare parts and replacement Trent 1000 engines that power its Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

The airline operates a fleet of 40 787s.

Five of its 787s are to be grounded and it says some Boeing 777 planes also need routine maintenance.

“We’ve taken this action because we do not believe the issue will be solved quickly," the airline said in a statement. "We want to offer our customers the certainty they deserve.”

BA will cut one flight a day from London Heathrow to Doha and postpone the re-start of Kuala Lumpur flights, which were scheduled to resume next month.

Asian destinations hot for summer travel

Bangkok and other Asian destinations have been summer favourites for travellers booking summer trips on digital travel platform Agoda.

Agoda has just unveiled the top five international flight destinations based on booking data on the platform between June and August 2024.

This year's rankings show a mix of familiar favorites and some shifts in traveller preferences compared to last year.

The updated Agoda rankings highlight Bangkok, Seoul, and Kuala Lumpur as top choices for international travelers, underscoring a preference for destinations within the Asia-Pacific region during the warmer months.

Bangkok retains its position as the top summer destination for the second consecutive year.

Seoul overtook Singapore to take the second spot. Kuala Lumpur also sees an improvement, moving from fourth to third place. Singapore now ranks fourth while Tokyo makes its entry into the top five, replacing Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

"The summer of 2024 currently shows a trend towards Asia Pacific travel,” says Andrew Smith, Senior Vice President, Supply at Agoda,

“Destinations like Bangkok, Seoul, and Kuala Lumpur continue to attract many travelers, reflecting their appeal and the diverse experiences they offer.

“The popularity of these destinations highlights the ongoing fascination with vibrant cities like Bangkok, known for their unique blend of modernity and tradition. Seoul captivates visitors with its cutting-edge technology and historic palaces, while Kuala Lumpur offers a dynamic mix of skyscrapers and cultural landmarks.

“Singapore's futuristic skyline and Tokyo's eclectic neighborhoods also continue to draw travelers seeking both urban excitement and cultural heritage.”

The ranking is based on flights booked on Agoda between June and August 2024, compared to the same period in 2023.

Founder of failed airline under arrest

UPDATE:

The founder of the recently collapsed MYAirline has been arrested under suspicion of money laundering.

Airline co-founder and major shareholder Goh Hwan Hua was detained along with his wife and son.

MYAirline abruptly shut down last week (see below) leaving hundreds of passengers stranded at airports.

The Royal Malaysia Police has confirmed the three are in custody, assisting with an investigation into various financial crimes.

Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf, director of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department, said police are investigating possible crimes under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act.

The fledgling budget airline went out of business with zero notice, leaving passengers stranded.

MYAirline was founded in 2021 and began flying on December 1 last year, but ceased operations leaving passengers stuck at airports with zero information.

Customers due to fly last week were only informed the Malaysia-based airline had ceased trading when they tried to check in for flights.

The airline announced the suspension of operations due to "significant financial pressures".

Passengers arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 to find all MYAirline check-in desks closed.

MYAirline has issued a statement, apologising for the sudden shutdown and said it was unable to offer passengers any immediate "service recovery options".

The news came just three days after the airline touted it had been granted a two-year extension to its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM).

AirAsia has offer 50% discounted "recovery" fares on several routes, applicable to all passengers with MYAirline confirmed bookings

MYAirline destinations included Langkawi, Penang, Tawau, Kota Bharu, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Kota Kinabalu-Tawau, and Bangkok.

Batik Air is also offering discounted fares to stranded passengers on various domestic routes and to Bangkok.

A MYAirline statement said: "The airline has come to this extremely painful decision because of significant financial pressures that have made it necessary to suspend operations pending the shareholder restructuring and recapitalization of the airline.

"We deeply regret and apologize for having to make this decision as we understand the impact it will have on our loyal passengers, dedicated employees and partners. We have worked tirelessly to explore various partnership and capital raising options to prevent this suspension. Unfortunately, the constraints of time have left us with no alternative but to take this decision."

Air Asia X returns to the Gold Coast

The AirAsia group is making another major push into Australia with an announcement of a return first-ever route - the Gold Coast, from February 15 next year.

The route will be the airline’s fourth destination in Australia, further expanding its network Down Under.

Following the return to Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, AAX has carried over 30,000 guests between Malaysia and Australia.

That number is set to grow substantially with the new announcement and additional frequencies to Sydney and Melbourne launching this month.

Fares between the Gold Coast and Kuala Lumpur start from RM799 (under $299) all-in one way for economy and RM3,999 (under $1340) one way for premium flatbed seats.

AirAsia X CEO Benyamin Ismail said there has been overwhelming demand for the airline’s return to the Gold Coast

“We are thrilled to be coming back to the stunning Gold Coast as the first and only low-cost carrier flying direct. As our first-ever route, which launched in November 2007, this is an incredibly special announcement for AAX.

“Fifteen years ago the Gold Coast was the catalyst for the birth of AirAsia X and our Australia expansion, which quickly became one of our most popular core markets.

“Through Kuala Lumpur, AirAsia X will connect visitors to more than 130 destinations across Asia, including Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, India, South Korea and many more.”

Queensland Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said: “The return of AirAsia X to Gold Coast Airport’s arrivals board is a terrific investment in Gold Coast tourism and jobs.

"International aviation is highly competitive but absolutely critical to rebuilding Queensland’s post-Covid overseas visitor economy and that’s why we’re backing AirAsia X on the Gold Coast.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming Malaysian visitors back to enjoy Queensland’s great lifestyle in Australia’s favourite destination and AirAsia X increasing its inbound flight schedule to five a week by late 2023."

Alongside AAX’s return to Australia, sister medium-haul airline Thai AirAsia X also recently launched its first ever direct services between Bangkok to Sydney and Melbourne.

Air Asia X returns to Australia

I have always been a fan of low-coast carrier AirAsia X, despite a recent frustrating experience with its online booking portal.

The service delivers what you pay for; and the food is tasty.

The medium- to long-haul affiliate airline of AirAsia will be back flying to Australia from November after a prolonged hiatus - and tickets are now on sale.

There will be flights from Kuala Lumpur to Melbourne (Tullamarine), Sydney and Perth in Australia, as well as to Auckland in New Zealand from November 1.

AirAsia X has plans for 13 routes to be operating this year, including New Delhi, Seoul, Tokyo, Sapporo, Osaka and Honolulu, as well as London, Dubai and Istanbul.

AAX will recommence with three weekly flights to each Australian destination and will gradually increase the frequency to daily flights by the first quarter of 2023 to meet strong pent-up demand, the airline said in a press release.

Fares are now on sale from Perth to Kuala Lumpur from $209 and from Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur from $359.

AAX CEO Benyamin Ismail said: “We are thrilled to recommence our services to Australia and New Zealand as a core part of our expansion strategy with our famous great value fares for medium to long-haul travel.

"We are also pleased to announce our return to Melbourne Airport [rather than Avalon] which offers more flexibility and connectivity for our guests travelling to and from the state of Victoria.

“In 2019, we flew over a million guests to both countries, which shows that Australia and New Zealand are important markets for us and we connected the same number of Australians and New Zealanders to Malaysia and across Asean."

Melbourne Airport Chief of Aviation Jim Parashos said: “AirAsia X flew out of Melbourne Airport for a decade, and we know our customers will be thrilled to have them back here. With a significant network beyond Kuala Lumpur, AirAsia X provides a one-stop service into much of India and South-East Asia, which is particularly valuable for international students or Victorians looking to visit friends and family overseas."

AirAsia X offers three seating classes - Economy, Quiet Zone and Premium Flatbed.

AirAsia X resumes flights between Sydney and Kuala Lumpur

I am a huge admirer of Air Asia and its offshoots.

You get exactly what is promised: cheap fares all over south-east Asia, and decent food on board.

Now, following a successful restructuring process, AirAsia X is resuming its commercial service between Kuala Lumpur and Sydney starting from February 14.

The airline says it will be prioritising full redemptions for passengers affected by the restructuring.

Flights will initially be operated weekly on Mondays from Kuala Lumpur to Sydney and returning on Tuesdays from February 14 to March 22. Schedules for the autumn/winter seasons will be announced in mid February.

Fares start from RM1,399 ($460) one way all-inclusive in economy or guests can choose to experience the Premium Flatbed service from RM3,999.

From Sydney to Kuala Lumpur, fares start from $399 and $1,299 one way.

Benyamin Ismail, CEO of AirAsia X, said: “Following our travel downtime over the last two years, and the recent completion of our restructuring process, we are thrilled to be able to relaunch and commence our gradual return to the skies.

"This would not have been possible without the overwhelming support from our guests and creditors and we thank them for their patience and understanding.

“Without any domestic routes AAX has been significantly affected by the pandemic. We now see light at the end of this long tunnel and we are working hard to operate again in all of our key markets, as one of the world’s leading low-cost medium haul operators.

"Starting with flights to and from Sydney, we will progressively continue to honour outstanding bookings and credit accounts for our guests and creditors in other markets as soon as possible.

“As we anticipate the gradual reopening of international borders around the world in 2022, we are delighted to return to Australia first, as one of our most popular markets.

"This new weekly service for guests marks a significant milestone for the resumption of our commercial services and will contribute to our growth post-restructuring.

“We look forward to announcing additional new services soon."

Fully vaccinated Australian citizens, permanent residents, international students and eligible visa holders can travel to and from Australia without applying for a travel exemption. For full entry requirements into Australia, please visit this page.
