Would you like your wine in a recyclable aluminium bottle?

Brown Brothers has just unveiled an Australian first - releasing a limited-edition prosecco in a slick-looking aluminium bottle.

The bottle is being promoted as recyclable and 40% lighter than glass.

"Delivering the same vibrant taste you know and love, this eco-friendly bottle makes it easier than ever to enjoy our prosecco," the promotional material says.

"Lightweight and portable, it’s perfect for a picnic in the park, a weekend away, or simply embracing the everyday moments worth raising a glass to."

The Brown Brothers team says the new vessel also chills faster.

The wine is made in Victoria's King Valley and Brown Brothers says it is "a sip in the right direction when it comes from environmental impact – without compromising on flavour or quality".

The RRP for the limited-edition Prosecco Brut NV is $25.

Wine entrepreneur Brown honoured in Australia Day awards

Ross Brown, one of the nicest men in the wine industry, has been honoured for his service to Australia's wine and tourism industries.

Brown, the 76-year-old semi-retired executive director of Brown Family Wine Group, received the Medal of the Order of Australia as part of Australia Day celebrations.

Brown led Brown Brothers for decades and oversaw the company's ventures into Tasmania with brands including Devil's Corner and Tamar Ridge, as well as realising the potential of prosecco in Victoria's King Valley.

"You know, I can think of 100 other people who are far more deserving of recognition - but it's been very flattering and pretty amazing that's been acknowledged," said Brown, whose three daughters nominated him.

Founded by Brown's grandfather in 1889, the Milawa-based Brown Family Wine Group is behind brands such as Brown Brothers, Innocent Bystander and Pirie.

Brown started working with his brothers in the 1960s to develop the family farming and wine business into a global wine company.

His brothers became more involved in the winemaking and vineyard operations, so it fell to Brown and his "gift of the gab" to look after the sales and marketing side of the business.

Brown told AAP he was a strong believer in what he called "co-opetition" - co-operating with his competitors.

"As I believe it, by working together you can actually build a bigger pie,'' he said.

"And in the tourism industry, you actually have to co-operate, because you can't get people to come to a region individually.

"You need to be working a whole chemistry of other businesses and other people - and it's pretty painstaking in some of those areas, working collectively.

"But the end result is you build a bigger pie, and soon, as you've got a bigger pie, you can get a bigger share.

"Having that mentality has allowed me to work in a number of areas and get some pretty amazing results."

Another major wine figure honoured with an AM in the same list was Alister Purbrick from Tahbilk.

Purbrick has been a pivotal figure in the Australian wine landscape, serving as president of the Winemakers' Federation of Australia (WFA) from 1999 to 2001 and as inaugural chairman of Australia's First Families of Wine from 2006 to 2010.

He has led his family's Tahbilk Group since 1978.

Get a behind-the-scenes wine experience at Brown Brothers

Ever thought that you'd like to play winemaker for a day?

Brown Brothers at Milawa in north-east Victoria is the latest wine producer in Australia to offer a behind-the-scenes winemaking experience as part of its Unique Winery Experiences of Australia offering.

Visitors are invited into the Brown family's Kindergarten Winery to learn about the winery's processes, small-batch winemaking techniques and hands-on practices.

They can sample wines from blending tanks and gaining an understanding of how wines are finished.

A wander through the barrel shed, where red wines are aging, is next with a chance to sample direct from the barriques.

The Brown Brothers family cellar contains wines spanning several decades. The family has a 130-yeae winemaking history.

Back at the cellar door participants enjoy a guided tasting experience, including premium and back vintage wines.

The experience is limited to six people at a time.

It will be held each Monday at 2:30pm until the end of the year.

New aged sparkling wine stars in Brown Brothers' Patricia releases

A new aged sparkling wine is a special release as part of Brown Brothers 20th anniversary Patricia reserve wine range.

The 2010 Extended Lees Patricia Sparkling, a wine that has been kept on lees for over 12 years, is the new addition to a range that honours late family matriarchs Patricia Brown.

The newcomer is made using pinot noir and chardonnay grapes grown in the King Valley in north-east Victoria - close to Brown Brothers' base at Milawa.

"The 2010 vintage had so much lively acid and freshness, we thought it would be great to keep a small number of bottles back and age it," says Cate Looney, Brown Brothers' senior winemaker.

"It has resulted in beautiful creamy, nutty, dried fig characters you get with this extra time on lees."

This is the 20th release for Brown Brothers most premium range, which includes the 2017 Patricia Sparkling, 2021 Patricia Chardonnay, 2018 Patricia Shiraz, and 2018 Patricia Cabernet Sauvignon.

“Patricia wines are renowned for their exceptional quality,” says Cate. “We blind benchmark each release against local and international peer wines and as we produce each vintage we're reminded of Patricia's wise words: ‘You can name this range after me, but it better be bloody good!’

"Our commitment to upholding her legacy remains unwavering even after 20 vintages.”

The 2010 Extended Lees Sparkling will be available to purchase at Brown Brothers cellar door and online at brownbrothers.com.au for $160 in a single gift box.

I shall report back when I have tasted it.

New moscato pushes wine boundaries

I think it would be fair to say that I am not the target market for the latest Australian wine industry wheeze.

Two of Australia’s leading gourmet brands have teamed up to create a limited-edition moscato flavour that has just been released.

Inspired by a Gelato Messina classic, the Brown Brothers Moscato Strawberries & Cream is obviously aimed at a young, sweet-toothed demographic.

It is being billed as "a flavour-filled dream from two strong, family-owned brands that share a love for innovation, taste, and adventure".

The new wine has been infused with natural ingredients to create a strawberry and cream taste profile, that is supposed to be enjoyed well chilled.

It is available at Brown Brothers' Milawa cellar door, online at brownbrothers.com.au, or at Coles Liquorland, First Choice, Vintage Cellars and select independent retailers.

The RRP is $16.50 and the wine comes in at just 8% alcohol. It is made for drinking now.

And no, I have not yet tried it. Nor am I keen to do so.

Brown Brothers back in festival mode

The Brown family have always excelled at wine tourism - even before it was a thing.

The Brown Brothers cellar door at Milawa in north-east Victoria has been a favourite stop-off for generations of wine lovers - and helped build immense brand loyalty.

A highlight of the busy events calendar, the 36th annual Spring Wine & Food Festival, returns later this month.

The festivities begin with the opening dinner, a shared feast served in the historic barn and matched with premium Brown Brothers wines, including a taste of rare and back vintage highlights from the Brown family cellar.

The event will be hosted by fourth-generation family member Katherine Brown, and Brown Brothers' wine ambassador Andrew Harris, who will celebrate the family wine history dating back to 1889.

Activities over the weekend include free wine tastings at cellar door; the Innovation Courtyard, where guests can blind taste some new wines, with the opportunity to provide feedback and a GoVino wine tumbler to take home with each adult ticket.

There will be live music in the grounds from noon-3pm, an all-day grazing menu in the Barn and a selection of local beers, ciders and soft drinks.

The event will run from 10am-5pm on both days with admission costing $20.

The restaurant will feature a seasonal set menu of 12 dishes served share-style for $90pp or $130pp with matched wines.

Why distinguished sites matter to Australia's family wineries

The French word terroir encompasses the natural environment in which a wine is produced, including factors such as the soil, topography, and climate.

They believe the tastes and textures of a wine are majorly influenced by where is is grown: the terroir.

Indigenous Australians have a similar concept, known as pangkarra.

Four of Australia's leading family wineries go together for Zoom tastings this week in which they explored what they call "distinguished sites" - vineyards that produce top-quality fruit each vintage.

Howard Park, Taylors, Brown Brothers and Yalumba looked at key sites in Western Australia, the Clare Valley, Victoria and the Barossa, discussing the key elements involved in growing fruit for benchmark wines.

All four wineries are part of the group Australia's First Families of Wine and they each presented a shiraz and a cabernet sauvignon that reflected their terroir. Blend PR put together the event.

The representatives were Nic Bowen (below) from Howard Park talking about vineyards in Margaret River and the Great Southern, Mitchell Taylor (above) from Taylors on the St Andrews vineyard in Clare, Tracy Taylor from Yalumba looking at the Barossa and Eden valleys and Coonawarra, and Andrew Harris from Brown Brothers talking about various sites in regional Victoria.

Yalumba alone has no fewer than 123 grape growers on its books - in addition to its estate vineyards - so it needs to know where its best sites are for wines like The Cigar, a Coonawarra cabernet, and the Paradox shiraz.

Similarly, Brown Brothers has access to a wide range of resources for its Patricia Shiraz and Cabernet, while Mitchell Taylor concentrated on the "diversities and synergies" of just one standout vineyard.

Bowen looked at they key elements in the Scottsdale Shiraz from the Great Southern and the Leston cabernet from Margaret River.

"This was a great collaboration between like-minded family wineries," said Mitchell Taylor. "It was an excellent opportunity to give members of the wine trade and media a look at our various and different vineyards."

Regional expression, and terroir, are alive and well in Australia.
