Thanks Brexit: chaos continues at British port

Thousands of travellers have spent the past two days stuck in queues at the British port of Dover.

British Home Secretary Cruella Braverman denied that post-Brexit checks were to blame for the chaos, even though such delays were rare when Britain was part of the EU.

Despite extra sailings having been put in place, P&O Ferries said on Sunday afternoon that coaches arriving at the cruise terminal would be likely face a total wait of over 10 hours owing to the border formalities required and a lack of border staff.

Angry customers bombarded ferry companies and the port with complaints, British media reported.

The port said ferry companies received 15% more coach bookings for the Easter period than had been expected.

Boarding coachloads of passengers is much slower than boarding cars

Speaking on Sky News, Braverman said operations at borders crossings had been “very good” since Britain exited the EU.

“I don’t think that’s fair to say that this has been an adverse effect of Brexit,” she said. “We’ve had many years now since leaving the European Union and there’s been, on the whole, very good operations and processes at the border.

“At acute times where there is a lot of pressure crossing the Channel, whether that’s on tunnel or ferries, then I think there’s always going to be a backup. I just urge everybody to be a bit patient while the ferry companies work their way through the backlog.”

Later, speaking to the BBC, Braverman denied the situation at Dover would repeat itself and blamed “bad weather” and heavier than expected bookings.

She was lambasted by opposition politicians for being "out of touch".

Now Britain has left the EU, French officials need to do individual passport checks, which wer not needed before.

Caroline Lucas, a Greens Party MP, described Braverman as being “on another planet as usual”.

Cygnet gets a new adult retreat

The small town of Cygnet is one of Tasmania's tourism drawcards with its lovely waterfront location, many cafes and art galleries.

But there is frequently not enough visitor accommodation at peak periods - particularly during the annual Cygnet Folk Festival and other major events.

Overlooking the boats on Port Cygnet, the Huon Valley hamlet this week gained a new adults only holiday home: Port Cygnet House - just a couple of minutes' drive from the township.

If you are looking for a spot to chill out for a few days, or a base from which to explore the southernmost part of Tasmania, Port Cygnet House might fit the bill. I took a sneak peek a couple of weeks ago and was impressed.

There are two bedrooms, quirkily furnished, and two bathrooms, both with underfloor heating for cooler nights - which are not unknown in this part of the world.

The owners, who also use the home as their holiday retreat, have extensive experience in the hospitality industry, so just about everything has been thought of.

For anyone looking to cook up a storm with the abundant local produce, there is a gourmet kitchen with pots and pans, knives, utensils, crockery, spices, oils and condiments.

All the tableware, crockery and silverware are provided - and you can dine inside or take in the expansive views from the deck.

There is a laundry, plenty of parking and barbecue ready to be fired up. From the Espresso machine to USB points and fluffy towels, this is like your own private hotel - but with much more space.

Rates start from $400 per night with a  minimum two nights, or three nights in peak periods.

Bold Melbourne hotel breaks the mould

In a world awash with cookie cutter corporate hotels, the funky Hotel Quincy Melbourne is a breath of fresh air.

It's a high-rise hotel with a touch of swagger and individuality, right on the doorstep of the nightclubs, bars and eateries of King Street and Flinders Lane.

Think brightly decorated rooms, street art-decor in the lift and on the walls, a rooftop bar and plunge pool with sweeping views of the city, a funky Asian-themed eatery, and mini bars with a difference.

Choose your pillow style, and talk with a Q-urator before you arrive to make sure everything is just as you want it.

There is also a Club Lounge for high flyers.

The Quincy brand began in Singapore, where food is of serious importance, and guests can choose between the grab and go SingSong, offering all-day grazing adjacent to reception, and the rather excellent first-floor Salted Egg, reviewed here last week:
https://www.gourmetontheroad.com/2023/03/punchy-asian-flavours-shine-in-melbourne.html

On Q, the hip bar on the 28th floor, offers a happy hour, local beers and cocktails and views over Melbourne's worker ants way below at street level.

For guests who have had enough of Melbourne's hustle and bustle and just want to stay in their room, dinner can be served in a traditional tiffin tin, or you can choose from the mini bar that includes the likes of DIY bubble tea kits and Bae juice, made with Korean pears, to help aid hangovers.

If you've had a big night, the late night room service choices include alcohol neutralising lamb and cumin filled roti bread with cucumber and chilli relish

Rooms are bright with reliable wifi, in-house movies and big-screen TVs with a Chromecast option.

General Manager Christian Price says the hotel's ethos is about "having fun".

My only criticism is that the lifts are slow at peak times. But for a grumpy sod like me that is a disappointing tally of dissatisfaction.

The 241 rooms are in three styles and all offer a Kevin Murphy amenities range, a selection of teas and coffees, as well as coconut water and mini bar potato chips in Singaporean laksa or Hainanese chicken rice flavours.

Oh, and if you are staying for breakfast in Salted Egg, the scrambled eggs with crab, Sichuan oil and crispy salt bush are not to be missed.

Quincy Melbourne has also teamed with local distillers Antagonist Spirits to create an exclusive gin for the mini bar.

Quincy Hotel Melbourne lead-in rates start from $205.79 but vary according to the season and what's on in town.
