Merlot specialist bucks the trend

Some wine drinkers love the romance of cork and can overlook its fallibility as a closure.

Others, like myself, prefer a closure that is more convenient and can be trusted: the screw cap.

But does the closure used in a wine have any real impact on taste?

The crew at Limestone Coast merlot specialists Mérite Wines sent me samples of their new-release 2018 Mérite Merlot under both cork and screw cap.

I served the wines blind to a recent tasting group of around 25 people, presenting them as different wines.

When I asked who preferred Wine A, or Wine B, around two-thirds of the group preferred the wine under screw cap, several describing it as "fresher".

Not scientific, or definitive, but definitely interesting as both wines appeared in excellent condition.

Mérite commands interest because it is one of only a handful of Australian merlots not made from the rather dull D3V14 clone, which was widely planted across the country.

The Mérite merlots are made from a selection of new clones from France that thrive in cooler climes.

The grapes grown on a 40-hectare vineyard in Wrattonbully on South Australia's Limestone Coast that saw 18 hectares planted with the new clones: 8R, Q45, 181, and 343, in 2006.

Those vines are now fully mature and the 2018 release shows the merits of the new clones; producing wines with greater weight and more palate interest than most Australian merlots.

The wines were bottled under Ref1 corks and screwcaps. Take your choice. The 2018 is $60 a bottle and drinking superbly on release.

Why you should avoid New York State right now

Heading for New York State this week? Maybe wait a few days.

The western part of the state has had early winter snowfalls of up to 1.9 metres and even long-time residents have been amazed by the falls, particularly around the city of Buffalo.

Massive snowdrifts have made driving near impossible - with many major roads closed.

The snowfall was blamed for at least two deaths due to “cardiac events” related to shovelling and moving snow, county officials said, and an estimated 280 people needed to be rescued said New York Governor Kathy Hochul.

Orchard Park, the home of the Buffalo Bills football team, has 1.9 metres of snow and the Bills were forced to move a home game scheduled for Sunday against the Cleveland Browns to 300+km away in Detroit.

Dozens of flights arriving and departing from Buffalo Niagara International Airport were cancelled as storm conditions worsened, the airport’s website reported.

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown told CNN that while his city is used to heavy snow, this is “much more than we usually get.”

“This has been a very unpredictable storm with the snow bands moving, back and forth, north to south,” Brown said. “The snow has come down very fast, very wet, very heavy.”

A very soggy weekend for Tasmania

Visiting Tasmania this weekend? It may be a little soggy.

Heavy rain over the past few days has caused washaways, flooding and road closures right across the state.

Tasmania Parks and Wildlife have advised a number of areas and tracks have been closed due to the extreme weather conditions.

The following areas currently are closed:

Moulting Lagoon Campsite
Douglas Apsley National Park
Lake Augusta Road
Mount Barrow State Reserve lower shelter and picnic area
Arm River Regional Reserve
Little Beach Conservation Area
Mole Creek Caves
Cloudy Bay Campground
Meander Falls Road, Mother Cummings Rivulet
Patons Road, Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair
Liffey Falls Campground
Devils Gullet Lookout
Yeates Track, Great Western Tiers
Liffey Falls day use area and Riversdale Road
Tamar Island Wetlands

But there is some good news. Parks and Wildlife have completed assessments and have reopened the following tourism areas.

Hastings Caves: walking tracks are open, pool remains closed; Aquatic Point - Trevallyn Nature Recreation Area, Notley Gorge, Holwell Gorge and Ralphs Falls and Mt Victoria Road (open to 4WDs only).
