How to reduce your risk of having data hacked

Are you taking risks when you sign on to wifi servers when travelling?

Recent research by cybersecurity experts at NordPass, together with Saily, suggest your data may be at serious risk.

The team says fake wifi hotspots that allow cybercriminals to steal login details - and, in some cases, access saved credit card information - are on the increase.

Karolis Arbaciauskas, head of product at NordPass, says that “workations” made company accounts more vulnerable than ever, while Saily’s CEO Vykintas Maknickas highlights how travellers often connect to “the first wifi they see” without considering security.

Many holidaymakers rely on airport wifi to check emails, log into airline apps with the same password, or, share streaming accounts.

One recurring pattern is the rise of “workations.” Employees working from beaches ski chalets often connected to company accounts via unsecured networks.

"Families on group trips also frequently admitted to reusing the same password across multiple booking apps to keep it simple,” says Arbaciauskas.

He warns fake wifi hotspots set up in airports, hotels, or even beach cafés can look identical to the real thing. Once you are connected, cybercriminals can monitor traffic and capture login details.

“We’ve seen how travellers lean on quick connections to stay in touch with home, work, or entertainment,” said Maknickas.

“But not all networks are created equal. Choosing a secure, reliable connection can make the difference between a smooth trip and one filled with unexpected cyber troubles.”

Five tips:

# Audit your passwords: Replace any that are weak, reused, or shared over the summer.

# Think twice about wifi: Public hotspots are a hacker’s favourite playground - use mobile data or a VPN.

# Keep accounts personal: Sharing logins may seem harmless, but it weakens your digital defences.

# Secure work accounts: If you worked on the road, reset critical passwords now.

# Use tools that do the heavy lifting: A password manager helps generate and store strong, unique passwords.

# NordPass is a password manager for both business and consumer clients.

Thailand wants visitors to feel safe

Recent attacks on visitors have prompted The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to officially launch the “Trusted Thailand” stamp in a bid to reinforce confidence among tourists.

The aim is to project Thailand’s image as a safe and welcoming destination, news hub Travel Mole reports,

It comes after a recent attack on tourists in Bangkok. Two Malaysians were doused in chemicals and set on fire.

Jakkaphon Tangsutthitham, vice ministeru for Tourism and Sports, said the Thai Government recognises that safety is the foundation of sustainable tourism and remains a top priority.

“China is a key source market, and it is crucial that we preserve trust among Chinese visitors. This reflects an invitation to all tourism operators, partnered agencies and stakeholders to work together in advancing Thailand’s tourism towards safe, secure and sustainable growth.”

TAT says it has prioritised Thailand’s readiness to be a safe, trustworthy, and friendly destination.

Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, said: “The Trusted Thailand stamp is a practical mechanism to restore traveller confidence while laying the foundation for Thailand’s tourism industry to meet international safety standards.”

Under the initiative, tourism operators will be assessed to receive the “Trusted Thailand” stamp, serving as a symbol of assurance. It is clear authorities cannot guarantee safety.

The assessment will cover four key areas: general safety measures at tourism sites such as CCTV installation, emergency response systems, controlled access and disaster preparedness; secure financial transactions with recognised global platforms (such as Alipay and WeChat Pay); foreign language communication and professional visitor care; and safe access and mobility, including clear signposting, transport connections and information points.

Beyond certification, the project also features supporting activities to strengthen confidence across the sector.

These include a public forum with agencies such as the Department of Provincial Administration, Department of Tourism, Tourist Police Bureau and Department of Land Transport to discuss integrated safety management and targeted campaigns to rebuild trust ahead of the high season.

A dedicated mini-site will be launched next month providing a self-assessment platform for operators and a directory of certified businesses accessible to visitors.

Initially, the Thailand Safe Travel Stamp project is scheduled to launch nationwide in October, with implementation across the country.

We shall see if it is effective, or window dressing.

# Just 24 hours after the policy was launched, a Scottish tourist was shot and injured in a confrontation with a local drug vendor.

Opening up Suzhou to tourists

Shanghai is a global tourism magnet, while neighbouring Suzhou is much less well known.

That is why China Eastern Airlines has partnered with Suzhou city to launch the "Suzhou Pass" Co-Branded Card, exclusively available when booking international flights to China through the airline's official website.

Suzhou and Shanghai, two of eastern China's most beautiful cities, are just a short train ride apart. Suzhou city is known for its natural landscape, rich cultural heritage, and modern urban spaces.

The Co-Branded Card is the official benefits programme that provides travellers with access to Suzhou's cultural institutions and exclusive benefits to memorable experiences.

Specifically, it offers free access to Suzhou classical gardens including Humble Administrator's Garden, Tiger Hill, Lion Grove and a total of 14 renowned scenic spots across the city.

Travellers can also access discounts on over 100 restaurants and hotels and get special prices for events and on public transport.

The tap-and-pay Co-Branded Card allows travellers to pay across multiple platforms.

Travellers can book flights from overseas to Shanghai via the China Eastern Airlines official website, app or WeChat mini-programs by selecting the "Suzhou Pass Premium Product" package, which includes both the flight ticket and "Suzhou Pass" Co-Branded Card in a single order.

Once in China, visitors can easily collect their physical card at either Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) Terminal 1 or the Suzhou City Terminal.
