Landmark Brisbane hotel gears up for the Olympic Games

One of Brisbane's landmark hotels is preparing a new look ahead of the 2032 Olympic Games.

InterContinental Brisbane by IHG has unveiled a multi-million-dollar investment set to "completely reimagine the iconic property".

Works will start later this months and concluding in late 2027 with the 319-room hotel to "undergo a sweeping, progressive transformation".

A media release says the design "will infuse interiors with an effortless elegance and timeless luxury through considered detail and an organic connection to light and nature that echoes the hotel's subtropical surrounds, with the refurbishment program also seeing the hotel's room count grow from 319 to 324 upon completion".

Woods Bagot, the design firm behind the transformation of InterContinental Sydney and InterContinental Sydney Coogee Beach, are leading the design vision.

Hotel interiors will be progressively and comprehensively refurbished, from guest rooms and suites to meeting and event spaces.

Level Six will feature an all-new concierge gallery, including an upgraded arrival area, lobby, and reception, aligning with InterContinental brand standards.

Dining highlights will include a new Argentinian grill restaurant and intimate Italian pasta and wine bar.

The hotel will remain open throughout the staged renovation project.

GM Shaun Parsons said the hotel is looking forward to unveiling a contemporary hospitality experience.

“This transformation marks a defining new chapter for InterContinental Brisbane and will set a new benchmark for luxury hospitality in the city," Parsons said.

"Our vision is to reimagine this local icon while paying homage to the iconic Harry Seidler building, bringing together exceptional design, approachable luxury and culturally rich experiences that reflect Brisbane's vibrant spirit.”

Adina Darling Harbour gets a new season revamp

A quarter century after it opened for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games the Adina Sydney Darling Harbour is entering a new era, unveiling a multi-million-dollar refurbishment.

The 114-room hotel welcomed back guests this week ahead of an official reopening in September.

The new look re-orientates the hotel towards the waterfront - and guests can now move seamlessly from hotel pool to harbour's edge.

Set between the CBD and King St Wharf - metres from the water and a short walk from Barangaroo - the Adina sits in one of Sydney's most connected precincts, offering easy access to both business and leisure hubs, harbourside attractions, and the International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The design narrative from Bates Smart draws on the building's strengths, with floor-to-ceiling windows and balconies that capture natural light and sea breezes. Each room features Adina's signature fully equipped kitchen and laundry, and space to stretch out.

TFE Hotels' Chief Executive Officer Antony Ritch says Adina Darling Harbour's transformation extends beyond the guest rooms, with upgrades across the entire hotel designed to create a seamless flow - allowing guests to move with ease from the lobby to the pool, through the restaurant and the harbour beyond.

Four flexible meeting rooms cater to everything from small team sessions, product launches through to special occasions and larger events of up to 150 people.

At harbourside level, the hotel will introduce a new signature venue - Shoreline Kitchen with all-day menus celebrating healthy modern Australian breakfasts through to vibrant salads, premium sandwiches and classic gourmet burgers.

“Designed with both travellers and locals in mind, this venue will bring a fresh, easy-going style where guests can settle in for long lunch, grab a quick coffee or enjoy an evening drink.” Ritch said.

“In line with Adina's Australian sensibilities, there is also a subtle nod to native bush flavours, with ingredients such as saltbush and pepperberry woven throughout the menu.

“With this refurbishment, we are firmly repositioning Darling Harbour as a contemporary harbourside base – and one that reflects how people want to travel and stay in the city today.

“It's part of our ongoing investment in our first-generation Adina portfolio, with a sharp focus on design and the guest experience.”

There is a lead-in rate from $279 per night: 15% off, plus a bottle of wine and Australian cheese board on arrival. Book and stay by April 30, 2027. Blackout dates and terms and conditions apply. See https://adinahotels.com/en/offers/sydney-darling-harbour-special/

* Pre‑loved furniture and fixtures from the refurbishment were donated to Sydney charity ReLove, helping support local families in crisis.

Vanuatu's Grand is getting grander

The Grand Hotel Vanuatu in Port Vila is set to officially re-open its doors and welcome guests back on March 6 after a journey of renewal.

Following the re-opening of its casino late last year, the hotel’s re-launch will showcase refreshed rooms and suites, upgraded facilities, and a new coral-coloured exterior.

The re-opening follows the completion of an extensive restoration program prompted by the December 2024 earthquake that affected Port Vila’s waterfront.

In the aftermath of the event, the hotel undertook one of the most ambitious refurbishment efforts in its history.

Think strengthened internal framing, modern lightweight structural materials, and a full re‑engineering of its core systems.

“After a period of rebuilding and strengthening, the Grand is back and better than ever,” says Bettina Mahieu, managing director of the Grand Hotel & Casino Vanuatu.

“This reopening celebrates resilience, pride, and hospitality. We’re thrilled to invite our guests, patrons, team, and the community back to enjoy the experiences they know and love, now refreshed and strengthened for the future.”

Perched on the edge of picturesque Port Vila harbour, the Grand is Port Vila's only waterfront four-star hotel that is central to the city, while also just 15 minutes from the airport.

The re-launched hotel will feature 74 rooms and suites, some including harbour views, private balconies, marble bathrooms, and modern amenities.

To celebrate the reopening, the hotel is offering a re-opening package for three nights starting from $1,190 in Australian dollars.

It includes accommodation in a deluxe harbour view room, midday checkout, daily breakfast, a welcome glass of Taittinger Champagne, a VT 10,000 hotel credit per room, per stay, redeemable at the Grand Dining Room, Pool Bar, or Lobby Bar, free wifi and complimentary return airport transfers.

The deal is available for stays from March 6 to May 30, subject to availability.

New Zealand's best address reopens after $25 million makeover

Huka Lodge might just be the best address in New Zealand

The world-renowned, century-old luxury lodge on the banks of the Waikato River in Taupō has just reopened the after a NZ$25million refurbishment by owners Baillie Lodges.

Known to Kiwis as ‘the grande dame of luxury lodges’ and a holiday destination for rock stars, royalty and (once) this writer, Huka Lodg is loved by locals and guests alike.

A series of contemporary features have been added as part of the works to time with Huka Lodge’s history.

Guests arriving at the lodge will now enjoy views of the spectacular Waikato River as it flows towards Huka Falls via the floor-to-ceiling windows in the new River Room (below).

New to the main lodge are an expanded dining room and bar, which overlook the river and gardens, while upstairs private lounging areas include The Loft and Piper Room, ideal for intimate dinners, special celebrations or meetings.

Guests can step from the River Room onto the outdoor terrace via large French doors, where a double-sided open fire warms lounging areas and tables for al fresco dining and drinks.

New wellness grounds feature a series of huts taking design inspiration from the traditional Kiwi ‘bach’ or holiday house, that together house a gym along with two spa treatment rooms, a sauna, ice contrast shower and a steaming plunge pool.

Three new bespoke experiences have been introduced to coincide with Huka Lodge’s reopening: The Craggy Range Culinary Escape with food, wine and scenic helicopter flights, the Epic Rotorua culture and adventure day, and the Ultimate Huka Experience with heli flight.

Baillie Lodges founder James Baillie has led the refurbishment, working with Auckland-based Christian Anderson Architects for the building design and partnering with esteemed New Zealand-born interior designer Virginia Fisher and landscape designer Suzanne Turley, each first appointed by Huka Lodge’s previous, long-term owner Alex van Heeren.

Baillie said it had been a privilege to have been trusted with the guardianship of Huka Lodge’s heritage and legacy, whilst readying the 100-year-old lodge for a new century of world-class travel.

“My wife and business partner Hayley and I first stayed at Huka Lodge in the early 2000s when we were considering plans for Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island, and which would become the Baillie Lodges flagship property,” Baillie said.

“Huka Lodge, its magnificent natural surrounds, the luxury of its design and the impeccable attention to
detail in both amenity and service became a benchmark and central point of reference for us both as we
actioned plans for Southern Ocean Lodge.

“It’s a great personal and professional honour to have completed this important redesign project for such an iconic property."

Huka Lodge general manager Kerry Molloy said he was thrilled to see the new designs come to life.

“What strikes me the most, having had the privilege to lead Huka Lodge for some 11 years, is that the new designs offer more reason for guests to spend time enjoying these beautiful spaces; dining, drinking or  relaxing with a book and the view,” Molloy said.

New look for centrally located ibis Perth

I probably would not want to stay in an ibis hotel for a couple of weeks.

The rooms are usually pretty compact.

But if you are looking for somewhere affordable to stay and will be out of your room for most of the day, then the range of ibis brands in the Accor portfolio do the trick - and offer all the facilities a tourist needs.

I'm told that ibis Perth has undergone a "remarkable transformation", emerging as a contemporary retreat.

I take claims that a makeover "redefines the economy hotel experience" with a pinch of salt. but the new look does present well.

The renovations saw an upgrade of all 192 rooms and bathrooms, as well as the lobby and social spaces.

The redesigned interiors incorporate locally sourced timber, drawing inspiration from Kings Park and Botanic Garden, the movement of the Swan River, and the Art Gallery of Western Australia.

Bathrooms feature rainfall showers, while the lobby has been transformed into a social hub and a new gym has also been opened.

Located on Murray Street in the heart of Perth’s CBD, ibis Perth certainly has location on its side.

Vincent Yeo, CEO of owners CDL Hospitality Trust said: “We are delighted to re-invigorate this hotel which will now offer a significantly upgraded guest experience in the central location that guests have always enjoyed.

"Our extensive investment throughout the hotel has transformed it into a truly differentiated product in the Perth market.”

ibis Perth will also soon launch its brand-new bar and social hub, Chelsea Social, with music and craft cocktails.
