Leading airline celebrates its 100th birthday

Aviation pioneer Lufthansa celebrates its 100th birthday this week.

The first “Luft Hansa” was founded on January 6, 1926 and had its maiden flight four months later.

The now global powerhouse was created through a merger of Junkers Luftverkehr and Deutsche Aero Lloyd, the foundation for a success story in international aviation that continues to this day.

The darkest chapter in Lufthansa’s history was during the Nazi era, when the airline became part of the Nazi regime and played an active role within it.

Lufthansa is using its 100th anniversary as an opportunity to critically examine its involvement during this time and further address it based on historical research.

With the re-establishment of the “second Lufthansa” in 1953, the legal foundation of today’s airline group was created.

In 1955, flight operations resumed, and the journey of the newly founded Deutsche Lufthansa AG began.

"The 100th anniversary of Lufthansa is a moment of pride and reflection," the airline said in a statement. "At the same time, it represents a bold look into the future and the beginning of the company’s second century."

Throughout the anniversary year, Lufthansa will organize a variety of activities and events to honour the history and future of the aviation group.

These include a permanent exhibition at the Lufthansa Group Hangar One at Frankfurt Airport, dedicated 100-year airline liveries, special events, a history book, film and video productions, employee celebrations, customer events, as well as marketing and product campaigns.

The special “100 Years of Lufthansa” emblem will appear on boarding passes, at airports, and onboard Lufthansa flights in many places.

Outside of airports – including in city centres – a poster campaign will tell Lufthansa’s story.

Besides operating flights under its own brand Lufthansa Airlines, the Lufthansa Group also owns several other airlines, including Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Discover Airlines, Eurowings, ITA Airways and Swiss International Air Lines.

It is the fourth-largest airline in the world by revenue.

Check out a new branding from Penfolds

Thinking of gifting a bottle of Penfolds wine over the festive season?

Maybe one with a point of difference?

Penfolds has just unveiled its holiday collection for the 2024 festive season with the release of Holiday Designed by NIGO.

The collectable series is available for a limited time globally and includes four giftboxes designed by Penfolds Creative Partner NIGO - the renowned Japanese artist.

Penfolds Holiday Collection is inspired by NIGO’s interpretation of the graphic checkered pattern found in traditional Asian textiles.

A symbol of eternity and prosperity, the two-tone square pattern repeats horizontally and vertically across all Penfolds holiday giftboxes.

NIGO’s designs are showcased across a collectable suite of festive giftboxes (designed in four colours: red, green, blue and black).

The collection is headlined by Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz ($120) with entry level wines at $30.

NIGO, who only uses one name (like Bono without the voice) said: “It was very important to me to incorporate my culture into this holiday collection.

“Integrating the checkered design and Furoshiki was a clear way for me to honour that. With this Furoshiki, Ihope collectors can wrap, gift, and share their Penfolds wines this holiday season.”

Penfolds first announced NIGO as its Creative Partner in June 2023, with the global release of One by Penfolds.

South Africans get their knickers in a knot over Noah

Humourist Trevor Noah would seem the perfect choice to promote tourism to South Africa around the world.

He's South African. He's funny, and he has a global profile.

The comedian and former The Daily Show host recently agreed a US$1.7 million deal with the Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA) to film an advert to boost travel to South Africa.

But the news sparked anger in Noah's native country, where the phrase "you have to spend money to make money" is clearly not well known.

Public criticism centred on the cost, at a time when power cuts are a major issue in cities and many people are struggling with rising food and fuel costs.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille said that "the Trevor Noah advert for SA does not involve public funds'".

TBCSA, a private umbrella tourism organisation, said the proposed deal would be "wholly funded" by the body "if and when the parties ultimately agree on a common strategy".

The former The Daily Show and Grammy Awards host is currently on a tour in South Africa that will also take him to the United States, India and Britain - and he is known worldwide for his TV appearances. He has a Netflix special launching around the globe in November.

Noah documented his upbringing in apartheid-era South Africa as the son of a black South African mother and a white Swiss-German father in his book Born a Crime.

Maybe those opposing his deal should check how much it would cost to sign up South Africa's only other true global star: actress Charlize Theron.

Farewell Hoges and Lara Bingle; hello Ruby the Roo

Farewell Paul Hogan and Lara Bingle. Hello to Ruby the Roo.

Tourism Australia has unveiled a new Brand Ambassador, Ruby, a souvenir kangaroo brought to life with CGI animation, as the face of a new global tourism campaign that will invite the world to Come and Say G’day when it launches next week.

The next instalment of Tourism Australia’s There’s Nothing Like Australia global brand platform will star Australian actress and Tourism Australia ambassador Rose Byrne, who will be the English voice of Ruby.

The campaign will also be localised in non-English markets, with Japanese actress Maryjun Takahashi to be the voice of Ruby in Japan.

The Minister for Trade and Tourism, Senator Don Farrell, this week unleashed Ruby to the world on a major digital billboard in Tokyo, kick-starting a world tour which will take Australia’s new brand ambassador onto billboards around the globe.

“From today Ruby will hop onto billboards in Singapore, London and New York building anticipation ahead of the launch of the new campaign, which will invite international travellers to Come and Say G’day,” Farrell said.

“Ruby will resonate with international audiences as the campaign is rolled out across key international markets to remind the world why There’s Nothing Like Australia.”

Tourism Australia managing director Phillipa Harrison said the new campaign will support the tourism industry as it rebuilds, by converting the pent-up demand for an Australian holiday and encouraging people to plan and book their adventure Down Under.

“We know that Australia consistently ranks high on people’s consideration list but we need to get travellers to take that critical next step and book their holiday to Australia to experience everything we have to offer,” Harrison said.

“Visitor economies around the world are looking to rebuild as we emerge from the pandemic and that will make the tourism landscape more competitive than ever before, which is why we have made sure Come and Say G’day will cut through and make Australia stand out today and in the long term.”

Tourism Australia Chief Marketing Officer, Susan Coghill, said the multichannel campaign will remind travellers of Australia’s iconic destinations and friendly faces.

“The use of an animated character in Ruby was a deliberate move that aims to cut through the clutter of destination marketing internationally and it is backed by research,” Coghill said.

Tourism Australia’s global Come and Say G’day campaign will officially launch on Wednesday, October 19.
