Two new hotels for downtown Auckland

Accor, the largest hotel operator in New Zealand, has announced details of the upcoming openings of two affordable new hotels in Auckland’s downtown.

TRIBE Auckland Fort Street (above) is scheduled to open on October14 and JO&JOE Auckland will open its doors on November 3.

The openings mark the New Zealand debut of both brands. Both are owned by New Zealand-based CP Group, one of the country’s largest private hotel investors and developers.

“We’re thrilled to introduce these brands to New Zealand for the very first time,” said Adrian Williams, Chief Operating Officer for Accor in the Pacific region.

“TRIBE and JO&JOE represent a new era of hospitality - bold, design-led, and deeply connected to the way people want to travel today.

"With our fantastic partner, CP Group, we are bringing fresh energy to Auckland’s hotel scene and giving guests more choice and more reasons to explore this dynamic city.

"As we head into summer, there are endless reasons to plan a trip to Auckland - from ferry-hopping to Waiheke Island’s world-class wineries, to hiking the volcanic trails of Rangitoto, relaxing on the city’s west coast beaches, or exploring the buzzing waterfront dining and nightlife scene.

"These two hotels are in the heart of it all, giving guests even more reasons to stay, play, and discover the very best of the Auckland region.”

TRIBE Auckland Fort Street will offer 60 rooms and is located moments from Britomart and Commercial Bay. Rates will start from $NZ 199. Book at  ALL.com.

JO&JOE Auckland (above) will have 298 beds across 73 rooms, ranging from dorm-style accommodation to private options. It will boast "bold interiors, a buzzing rooftop bar, and communal spaces like the playful Happy House". Bunkbeds will start from $NZ50. Reservations can be made from September at joandjoe.com.

Relaxed vibe makes TRIBE a hotel success story

Hotel chains with a design element and more relaxed, upmarket hostel-style vibe are all the rage right now.

Mama Shelter was one of the innovators, followed by Moxy, and TRIBE is proving a success for global giant Accor.

TRIBE has just reached 20 hotels around the globe with "contemporary living, offering spaces that are smart, stylish, and encourage social interaction".

Created in Australia in 2017 by Mark and Melissa Peters, there are currently over 40 TRIBE hotels currently under development, including TRIBE Auckland Fort Street (above), which will open in the second quarter of 2025.

“Reaching 20 TRIBE hotels is just the beginning of our journey to redefine modern hospitality,” said Jean-Yves Minet, global brand president, midscale and economy at Accor.

“TRIBE hotels are design-led spaces that are smart, stylish and comfortable, providing everything that guests need and nothing they don't.

"Our designers focus on the things that really matter, creating vibrant and functional places to work, play, or relax, all at a great price. As we continue to grow, our focus remains on delivering innovative experiences, ensuring that TRIBE continues to embody contemporary living for modern travellers around the world.”

Called "the lifestyle segment" this hotel style with shared public spaces is increasingly popular.

“Accor recognised the growing demand for lifestyle-based hospitality and TRIBE more than delivers on this, providing investors and owners an appealing and modern offering for hotel development,” said Camil Yazbeck, global chief development officer, premium, midscale and economy division, for Accor.

“By blending local vibrancy with strong design credentials, TRIBE has carved out a distinctive space that attracts both travellers and locals seeking social experiences and stylish design."

Some of TRIBE's locations are unusual, from Medellin, Colombia, to the vibrant but previously unfashionable Clichy in Paris.

Is this new brand your next hotel tribe?

Enjoy a colourful hotel vibe?

TRIBE, a design-led midscale brand from Accor, is about to make its New Zealand debut: in Auckland.

TRIBE Auckland Fort Street (it is their branding, I'm not shouting) will become the brand's first address in the country "serving as a stylish destination where guests and locals can work, play, and relax with a like-minded community of entrepreneurs and adventurous travellers".

The new hotel is located on Fort Street, just a short walk from central Britomart and the Commercial Bay precinct.

It will have 60 guest rooms described as "compact but ultra-comfy", along with a lobby bar, terrace, and social hub.

The media blurb says TRIBE Auckland Fort Street "will prioritise intelligent, functional, design-driven spaces that give guests everything they need and nothing they don't".

Accor Pacific Chief Operating Officer PM&E, Adrian Williams, said: “The introduction of TRIBE to New Zealand underpins our expansion strategy throughout the region - to introduce brands and hotels that respond to the needs and wants of modern travellers.

“Today's travellers seek simplicity, affordability, and connectivity in a design-led environment. They know that comfort and fair prices can co-exist and that's exactly what TRIBE hotels offer - spaces that are smart, stylish and comfortable, at a great price.

“We are excited to partner with CP Group to introduce this one-of-a-kind concept to New Zealand with TRIBE Auckland Fort Street. With its bold personality and socially connected culture, the hotel will become a hub that excites and inspires both travellers and locals.

“We know that TRIBE will resonate both with domestic and international guests in New Zealand and look forward to debuting the brand's first address here.”

TRIBE currently has over 15 hotels across the globe with a further 40 currently under development, including flagship addresses in France and the UK.

The Australian-born brand has one hotel in Australia - in Perth - but has been largely focussed on European destinations, particularly in Paris suburbs.
