Grand London hotel aims to open in time for coronation

London's new £1,000 a night hotel - its opening delayed several times - will be welcoming guests in time for the coronation of King Chares III.

The Raffles London at The OWO is scheduled to open the week of May 8, Accor CEO Sebastian Bazin has told Business Traveller magazine.

The historic property in Winston's Churchill's former War Office building was originally slated to open in 2022 and is one of the capital’s most hotly anticipated openings.

It has been plagued by delays, including Westminster City Council asking for clearer plans on alcohol service and live music venues.

The Old War Office is at the junction of the Horse Guards Parade and Whitehall in central London.

Bazin said he wants to see the London hotel become “one of the top five hotels on Earth”.

He added: “The property really is extraordinary in terms of size, grandiosity and its history as the former war office for Winston Churchill. Plus it’s a wonderful brand.”

Online bookings for Raffles London at The OWO are not yet open, with an official announcement still to come.

I tried a dummy booking for July at https://all.accor.com/ and was knocked back.

One of Asia's grandest hotels reopens its doors

One of Asia's grandest hotel addresses - Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor - has just reopened its doors to guests.

First opened in 1932 and widely celebrated as La Grande Dame de Angkor, the hotel has welcomed guests including Charlie Chaplin, Jackie Kennedy and Michelle Obama.

Operating as a hotel for almost 90 years, hotel underwent a transformation in 2019 with rooms and suites receiving a facelift before the global pause in travel.

There may be an older vibe, but guest rooms feature Segafredo coffee machines, USB charging stations and Simmons pillow-top mattresses.

The French windows, which swing open to views of street scenes or the plantation-style grounds of the hotel, have been upgraded, and each room now has a writing desk and vintage rotary telephone.

"It is a magnificent feeling to bring this enchanting hotel back to life,” said general manager Dennis de Groot.

“The Grand Hotel is a national treasure, and its storied history is testament to Cambodia’s colourful past. It was originally built as a rest stop for archaeologists and adventurers seeking to explore the ancient kingdom of Angkor Wat.

"As we prepare to celebrate the hotel’s 90th anniversary this year, we are delighted that this hotel can continue to set the standard for luxury hospitality, where travellers arrive as guests, leave as friends and return as family.”

Named after the year that Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor first opened, 1932 is the hotel’s latest signature restaurant, featuring Khmer cuisine.

Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor is situated just a 20-minute drive to the doorway of the UNESCO Heritage temples of Angkor.

Designed by French architect Ernest Hébrard in a style that combines Khmer art and furnishings with Art Deco influences, the hotel has just 63 rooms, all with private bathrooms and was taken over by Fairmont Raffles Hotels International in 1997 at the invitation of Cambodia’s King Sihanouk.

Raffles Hotel to open in London

Raffles is one of the most famous names in the hotel business and now Raffles Hotels & Resorts has announced Raffles London at The OWO will start welcoming guests from late 2022.

Raffles London at The OWO will be housed in the landmark Grade II-listed former Old War Office on Whitehall - a wonderfully imposing building.

Following a major transformation it will feature 120 rooms and suites, 85 branded residences and 11 restaurants and bars.

Britain's first Raffles hotel will also have an extensive wellness space featuring spa and fitness partners and will be home to a rooftop restaurant and bar with panoramic views across Whitehall, The Mall and Buckingham Palace, Travel Mole reports.

The Old War Office interior has classic Edwardian architecture and the building’s key features have been completely restored.

Raffles and owner Hinduja Group have brought together a team of industry talent including interior design by Thierry Despont.

Stephen Alden, CEO of Raffles Hotels & Orient Express said: "The launch of Raffles London at The OWO is a singular moment for the London hospitality scene as the Raffles brand arrives in the city.

"We are so proud to be part of the magnificent five-year transformation of the historic Old War Office building."

The original Raffles Hotel is a colonial-style luxury hotel in the downtown core of Singapore.

It was established by Armenian hoteliers the Sarkies Brothers in 1887.

The hotel was named after British statesman Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the founder of colonial-era Singapore.

Raffles: from one iconic hotel to a booming global brand

First opened in 1887, Raffles Hotel Singapore is a heritage icon with a guest list encompassing the great, the good and the infamous.

Probably the most famous hotel in Asia, Raffles Hotel Singapore (above) was named after Singapore's founder, Sir Stamford Raffles, and was built by the Sarkies Brothers, who were responsible for several other luxury hotels in the region during the colonial era.

Hotel wings, suites and other facilities have been added over the years but the hotel retains the caché that has attracted the likes of Queen Elizabeth II, Charlie Chaplin and Rudyard Kipling as guests.

Today Raffles Hotels & Resorts is a brand - and part of the Accor Group, with several new properties in the pipeline.

Later this year, Raffles will open a second hotel in Dubai (The Palm), along with hotels in Bahrain, Udaipur and Macau.

The brand will also debut flagship locations in London (2022), Boston (2022), Doha (2022), Jeddah (2022) and Moscow (2023), among others.

“Raffles approaches every endeavour with the utmost thought, care and discernment; our global expansion is no exception," says Stephen Alden, CEO, Raffles & Orient Express.

"With our pioneering spirit, we have sought out locations where we can really bring Raffles' gracious welcome and tradition of excellence to life.

"Each new Raffles property is a destination in itself, and we are creating places where people want to be, in tune with our well-travelled guests' contemporary lifestyles.”

Next year will see two key moments for the brand – with Raffles making its debut in North America and the United Kingdom.

Raffles Boston Back Bay Hotel & Residences is located in the heart of Back Bay, Boston's most prestigious neighbourhood, and comprises a distinctive hotel as well as exquisitely appointed residences.

Raffles London at The OWO and The OWO Residences by Raffles will be constructed in an old War Office building dating back to 1906.

Raffles may still be best known for introducing the world to private butlers, the Singapore Sling and its  legendary service in Singapore, but today it is much, much more with properties in Paris, Istanbul, Dubai, Warsaw, Jakarta and the Seychelles. See raffles.com
