Raffles: from one iconic hotel to a booming global brand

First opened in 1887, Raffles Hotel Singapore is a heritage icon with a guest list encompassing the great, the good and the infamous.

Probably the most famous hotel in Asia, Raffles Hotel Singapore (above) was named after Singapore's founder, Sir Stamford Raffles, and was built by the Sarkies Brothers, who were responsible for several other luxury hotels in the region during the colonial era.

Hotel wings, suites and other facilities have been added over the years but the hotel retains the caché that has attracted the likes of Queen Elizabeth II, Charlie Chaplin and Rudyard Kipling as guests.

Today Raffles Hotels & Resorts is a brand - and part of the Accor Group, with several new properties in the pipeline.

Later this year, Raffles will open a second hotel in Dubai (The Palm), along with hotels in Bahrain, Udaipur and Macau.

The brand will also debut flagship locations in London (2022), Boston (2022), Doha (2022), Jeddah (2022) and Moscow (2023), among others.

“Raffles approaches every endeavour with the utmost thought, care and discernment; our global expansion is no exception," says Stephen Alden, CEO, Raffles & Orient Express.

"With our pioneering spirit, we have sought out locations where we can really bring Raffles' gracious welcome and tradition of excellence to life.

"Each new Raffles property is a destination in itself, and we are creating places where people want to be, in tune with our well-travelled guests' contemporary lifestyles.”

Next year will see two key moments for the brand – with Raffles making its debut in North America and the United Kingdom.

Raffles Boston Back Bay Hotel & Residences is located in the heart of Back Bay, Boston's most prestigious neighbourhood, and comprises a distinctive hotel as well as exquisitely appointed residences.

Raffles London at The OWO and The OWO Residences by Raffles will be constructed in an old War Office building dating back to 1906.

Raffles may still be best known for introducing the world to private butlers, the Singapore Sling and its  legendary service in Singapore, but today it is much, much more with properties in Paris, Istanbul, Dubai, Warsaw, Jakarta and the Seychelles. See raffles.com
