Hobart tapas bar hits the Iberian high notes

The Black-Footed Pig is the tapas bar and restaurant that Hobart has needed for a long time.

Take a well-chosen selection of tasty tapas, a drinks list with a Tasmanian and Spanish focus, helpful staff who know their stuff and the hospitality industry nous of Naser and Cheryl Daci and you have a bar/restaurant that hits all the right notes. 

Tucked away between Salamanca Place and Brooke Street Pier, the Black-Footed Pig can be whatever you want it to be; whether that be a quick stop off for a Spanish beer and some almonds, or a full-blown restaurant with a good range of wines by the glass.

The decor is post-industrial chic, the vibe cool, but friendly. 

Standout items on the menu include crispy sesame prawns with soy, chilli and lime, and croquettes made from Serrano ham and smoked chicken.

Crumbed lambs brains with bacon also star, along with jamon served with home-made crisps, and a delicious stuffed tomato dish.

White wine choices range from Tolpuddle Chardonnay to Telmo Rodriguez Basa Verdejo from Rueda, while the sole rosé is a standout Capcanes "Mas Donis" Rosat, made from garnacha (grenache) at $11 a glass. Reds include the Gala Estate Constable Amos Pinot Noir and a Guimara Mencia Joven (great value for $9 a glass). 

There is a selection of raciones, bigger plates, which we will have to sample next time. And there will definitely be a next time. 

We did find space, however, for an outstanding dessert of bitter chocolate parfait, praline crunch and mandarin creme anglais.

So good we stopped here twice in a week. Highly recommended.
